Back up Camera and Video question

Hello,

I did Search and couldn't find anything.

By the end of June Im going to ad a Back up Camera and Video to my radio. When I bought the xB in February I had the upgraded Alpine touch screen installed a long with the custom fit bazooka sub.

Now the Owners Manual for the radio, says that I can enable a Back up Camera, and also that I can watch videos while connected to the AUX jack.

When I tried yesterday sound only came out, no picture.
I guess there are 2 options here

Option 1:
This is what I was thinking out doing. the back of my radio only has one yellow (video) jack. So i was going to buy the Yellow RCA splitter and connect the back up camera to the one side and connect the Video RCA cable to the other side. Do you think this will work? In the Manual, it doesn't say anything about the car being in park.

Option 2:
Optomize Scion Has a Alpine Video Input Kit, that Im not sure if I have this already since I have the Upgraded Alpine Radio... Ive tried to call the install people at Scion about this but no one returns my phone calls from there :(
But it says that "allows the installation of a Back Up Camera as well as allow the connection of an external Video Source (iPod Video playback requires optional showTIME interface kit), which can be displayed on the screen when the 2010 xB or xD when equipped with the 2010 Alpine Premium Audio! (optional upgrade Audio Unit)."
(Optomize Scion)

So if i have that Alpine Video Input kit I should be good or no? I guess I should really find out first and go from there... Sorry that this is so long, and I hope it makes sense.

Thanks in advance for the info and or help

audiovox backup camera question

I purchased an Audiovox back up camera and plugged the RCA video jack from the camera into the jack on the back of the Alpine stereo in my 2010 xB but nothing happened.

When I looked at the photo you submitted to the xB Forum site of the rear of your stereo I noticed that mine looks the same as yours. The model number on the front of the stereo is AXCL-WO9U.

I called Toyota and tried to order the part that you had listed and was told it wasn't a vailid number. I tried to go through Alpine and they told me I had to go through Toyota. These are the parts I checked on: Toyota part 7162162443 Alpine 001137162443

Did you order your cable through Alpine or Toyota? Are you using a back up camera?

I'm going crazy trying to get this to work. Any help you can offer would be most appreciated.

Thank you,

Michael

UPDATE: Back up Camera installation question

After spending 3 days and almost 2 hours on the phone between Alpine, Audiovox and Toyota trying to figure out what I needed to get the Audiovox backup cameras’ image to appear on the screen of the stereo in my xB, this is what I came up with:

The stereo in my 2010 xB was the upgrade model Alpine / Scion AXCL-W09U. Toyota part number PT545-00102; Alpine Part number Z90915563

Although the stereo has a RCA (yellow) video input connection on the rear of the unit, and the menu has a screen which lists turning the rear view camera on or off, you will get no image on the stereo screen simply by plugging in a camera’s RCA video input lead to the back of the stereo.

Don’t bother calling Alpine or Toyota, they won’t know what you are talking about if you ask them why you can’t get the backup camera to work.

Instead, Go to the ‘OPTOMIZE SCION’ website. The website tells you that you must order this cable through your Toyota dealer but chances are your Toyota parts department will not have a clue as to what you are talking about if you do try to order this part.

What I did was to call Optimize Scion at 1-800-780-2402 and ask them to call my local Toyota parts department to tell them how to order this part. The people at Optimize Scion were very helpful and understanding.

The Alpine Video Input Cable was ordered on Monday, August 15, 2010 for around $30.00. I will post an update to this when the cable arrives and I get it installed.

any pics of the finished product? I'd like to see it installed on the license plate. I'm thinking of doing the same thing but unfortuately, i've been to 3 chicagoland dealers and none of them can find this part for purchase. i got into an arguement with one that insisted it didn't exist even though i showed him the part on Optomizescion...

If I can figure out how to post a pic to this site, I'll send you a photo of the camera install on my xB2. I mounted the camera on the bottom of the license plate frame instead of the top. When I had the camera on the top of the license it blocked my hand from being able to raise the hatch. I think the camera mounted on the bottom of the license plate looks pretty good.

One thing I didn't think about when placing the camera was the fact that I have a trailer hitch on my xB. I mainly use the hitch setup when I want to attach the bike carrier. The thing is, the frame for the bike carrier extends from under the bumper at one end to mid center of the rear window at the other end. It perfectly blocks the camera, which would be very helpful when trying to back up with 4 bicycles. My plan is to mount a second camera above the rear window, near the window washer spray nozzle and then to install a switch that would allow me to use either camera.

One more thing. I found that quite often it is nearly impossible to see the camera image on the Alpine video screen when backing up if the sun is coming through the passenger window. I've tried sheilding the screen with my hand, a piece of cardboard, and fabricating a makeshift hood that blocks out the sun. My final solution was to order an Audiovox 3.5 inch screen from Amazon for around $70.00. I'll mount that screen where the sun won't interefer with the cameras image.

You can call the people at Optimize Scion at 1-800-780-2402, tell them what Toyota / Scion dealer you use and they will contact the parts department and tell them how to order the Alpine cable. Be aware though, the directions that come with the Alpine cable are incorrect.

Good luck with your install.

Mike, Thanks for the info about the license plate mount. i was going to install on the top part of the plate also. now i'm looking to see if i can actually install it inside the rear window. maybe towards the bottom, right behind the rear wiper or right under the top brake light.

also, with the glare you get from the passenger side window, i have mine tinted to match the rear windows and don't get too much glare on the screen. must be really sunny where your from.

i like your setup on the lower plate, but that set up will definately get stolen or jacked by a random hater in my neighborhood. i think i'll have to install inside the window. i think i can mount it on the sorta flat part of the plastic "lip" right where it meets the glass.

i got the cheap one on ebay, no brand on it that i can see, cost about 18 shipped. it has the camera built into a license plate bracket and it swivels up and down.

Great post, wanted to do the same thing to my 2010 box. Mike was there an entry through the body or did you have to make one? Going to check it out tomorrow. I'm thinking if it was an option then there should be a factory made entry point into the vehicle. Also did you hook up the power line to the reverse lights? And did you install a filter on the video line? Sorry for so many questions.;)

In response to your questions:

1. You need to remove the black plastic hatchback cover in the inside of the tailgate first. Then MAKE SURE that area where you will drill behind the license is clear and that you don’t drill into any other electrical component.

2. There is no factory entry point for the camera wire. I ended up using a 5/8 inch high speed drill and drilling a hole behind the license plate. The Audiovox camera has a type of ‘boot’ attached to camera lead which cannot be removed and the smallest hole that this boot would fit through was 5’8”.

3. The actual camera wire is a small diameter so you will need to get a rubber grommet at Lowes or Home Depot that is a 5/8 diameter OD (outside dimension) and the smallest ID (interior dimension) you can find. Where the camera wire passes through the xB’s sheet metal, you need to install the grommet (I cut mine in order to get it to fit around the wiring) and once your installation is complete, use some silicone sealant to make the entry point water tight.

4. After the camera wire is put through the grommet, I routed the wiring up the left side of the hatch back and through the corrugated rubber boot at the top of hatch. Then routed the wire through the ceiling area and down through the rear pillar to the area under the floor panel on the left side.

5. From there I wired the hot lead to the backup light and the negative wire to a ground point.

6. One thing that you should know is that when you hook up the Alpine cable, it tells you to run one of the wires to the emergency brake. If you do that, your back up camera will ONLY work while the emergency brake is engaged. As soon as you release the emergency brake, the camera’s image will disappear. The way I got around this was to wire the emergency brake wire to another power source. This way the camera is able to transmit its image as long as the car is in reverse.

7. The Audiovox camera came with no filter line and in my opinion, doesn’t need one. The image is crisp and clear.

8. Take your time, measure twice and drill once, and think out the whole process before you begin.

9. Good luck!

Can anyone tell me where you hooked what wire up to where.

I have seen several sites say only ground the blue wire to the radio bolts cause the instructions are wrong. I did this but the radio still shows "cannot operate video while vehicle is in motion"

The instruction mention a red and white wire.

Others say hook the green to the reverse wire or an always on power wire.

No one with exact instruction on what exactly they did, or at least no one that I could find.

Alright so figured it out on my own by messing with stuff.

The green wire is (-) ground, so when there is ground present it will allow you to view and hear the audio video cable for the external video source. This normally what you would hook into the parking brake. It is simple enough to ground to the HU bracket bolts.

The blue wire is for (+) power. When this cable receives the signal the screen automatically switches over to the rear view camera input. So don't hook it up to a constant power source unless it is on a switch.

When choosing a camera I suppose most cameras made for this would have an option on it to be able to switch to a mirror image. This would help in being able to see everything in the right place in relation to how you are looking at it. So the left of the screen you should see whats on your left and not reversed.
