Careful with aftermarket intakes. It's not a free ride and you do not have a high performance vehicle.
i’m not interested in any aftermarket parts or an intake. i specifically sought out and bought a stock xB. besides daily driver, i use it to haul my bikes and kayaks on the roof rails and bike rack.

the k&n washable filters look pretty good because they should last the life of the vehicle.

I hope this doesn't come out the wrong way but my little xb performs pretty dam good and I've done nothing to the engine. Aerodynamics are are made for this car for some reason. I must agree with the intake I put one on drove around the block and took it off..bought a pedal Commander. Best move ever. It just changes response time on the pedal.no chip no nothing. Not trying to go fast just utilizing what's there. And do the big 3 as well. You won't believe it..

that’s great! i just did a fuel fill up today and got 26mpg. i’m coming from an xA that i got rid of with 300k miles and did nothing to it (except routine maintenance) and it got over 30mpg with the same type of driving.

i’m just looking for anything i could do to possibly mitigate neglect from previous owners… like the super filthy air and cabin filters and engine had 5 quarts of oil in it.

never heard of pedal commander but looked it up… i don’t want to spend $300 for it but maybe some day. not sure what the big 3 is?

That's awesome..I'm in it to prolong the cars life as well..aside from the pedal commander..it basically takes away the lag when you are at a stoplight so it's not really adding any benefits, it just give you a little pep. The big three things another story. Probably the second thing I did..next time you go to your car, pop the hood and look at your spaghetti noodle of a ground wire. That thing is responsible for your electrical system. And I'm not sure who thought of that one and said...that's good..anyways the big three is your 2 grounds ( if there is 2) and your alternator wire. Don't even need to take old ones off unless damaged. If your a diy and a bargain hunter or cheapskate..whatever..look around welding supply shop maybe..stereo shop...or you can buy a kit with everything online. Not Ebay..haha. I did mine for $ 22.00 or something..but an instant change in your alternator ..battery life..all kinds you never think about and then go hey? I'm running better. Good luck man..I got mine in decent shape...I broke into it and I'm a cheapskate to the max..and little by little..I won't even start on tires! Haha

Are you driving for economy or are you just stomping on it? If you are driving for economy I would tell you that you might have a wheel bearing failure that's causing your miles per gallon to come down. I would look for friction loss on your vehicle and see what's up because you're missing 10% or more of your economy

oh i’m definitely a DIY as much as possible guy. i moved all the speakers (except dash tweeters), amp, amp/power wiring, and 15 year old bazooka tube over from the xA and did it myself.

instead of getting a $500 roof rail system from yakima/thule… i got a universal for $80 to carry my kayaks and j hook carriers were given free to me from a friend.

i finally upgraded my bike trunk racks after many years of hauling expensive mountain bikes but did the hitch receiver myself and opted for a swagman $200 rack instead of the $600+ racks all my friends use… so yeah i’m a bit of a cheapskate myself.

interesting to know about the big 3. I only had to replace the alternator on xA once and that was about six months ago and I was the original owner of the car in 2005! Batteries every five years or so.

It's interesting that you say that is the big three because I would have thought that was plugs, air filter and maybe full lubrication job or something like that. I wouldn't think the electrical wiring would be such a big deal as long as the proper current was getting to where it was supposed to go. Either way I'm glad you shared it.

i drive for economy but i have roof rails with j bar kayak racks and hitch and bike rack on the car all the time so that should cause some loss. i live in MD and my car failed inspection because of a motor mount and rear brake shoes. i did the shoes myself and paid to get the motor mount replaced. they are supposed to inspect wheel bearing as part of the very thorough process so hopefully that is not the issue… i don’t hear noise which is what indicated bad wheel bearing in my xA many years ago.

I would never want to live in an inspection state but damn that seems really thorough. Sounds like it's for the best of all vehicles.

I remember my family going through vehicle inspection when I was young in Florida and it was a major hassle as I recall.

I'd hate for the inspections to change to include vehicle manufacture date or rust level or something else that plagues all old cars. Thus removing old cars from the roads.

i got my first car in VA and we had to do a yearly inspection where they check your brakes, headlights, tires, mirrors, tires, wheels, etc… for like $20. i think it’s helps keep safe cars on the road. it wasn’t much of a hassle except if you waited until the end of the month and had long lines.

meanwhile in MD, we have a very thorough one time safety inspection (cost varies but around $100 and then additional $40 to inspect repairs) only during the sale or transfer of ownership of a vehicle and after that it only ever has to get an emissions test every 2 years. so, i see a lot of cars in questionable condition driving around in my state (my old xA for some periods as well)!

i see a lot more older vehicles in somewhat dangerous conditions and even broken down on the side of the road in MD than i ever did in VA but i’m glad to see so many people driving older cars… we need more people to reuse/recycle!

...glad I'm not alone. :D

I love the funky styling of these toasters. Most people question my love for them. They just don't understand.
I agree!! I Love my Toaster!! 2005 xb.
Everyone is embarrassed to ride in it but I dont care, ITS A CLASSIC!
BEST CAR I'VE EVER OWNED!
Purchased used with 15k miles in 2006.
Current miles 265k.
I did however, get a New engine and transmission 2 years ago at 240k miles.. Yeah, i know i probably paid too much, everyone yelled at me for doing so, and had it done at a Toyota dealership, but they were the only ones that I would trust with my baby! This car is going to out last me!!
Just need a new paint job and new stereo and we are good to go!!

I laugh at people who don't like them because they're stuck in that "hot rod" mindset. But the people who DO love them, look all the time, after so many years. I've had ladies in parking lots compliment me on the color and style of the Box- I didn't make the thing Toyota did lol

i’ve never been a car guy but i notice quirky practical vehicles like for instance the hyundai santa cruz sort of truck/car like the ridgeline and old subaru baja. my second car after my 87 chevy spectrum was a chevy pickup and i tore that truck up while it tore up my wallet but it could only haul 3 people on the bench seat and a not comfortable as a stick for the 3rd passenger.

my parents had an old 80s honda civic hatchback while we were in okinawa and i loved that car so that drove me to hatchbacks eventually. after my truck i had a V6 GTI for a few years and then the xA and now xB. all the cars i’ve owned in 30 years of driving and the xB is all i want in a car (hybrid/electric would truly be my dream version of it)… tons of space, excellent mpg, and i think it looks dope while it hauls all my toys and i can car camp in it way more comfortably than my xA!

I'm not sure if I can remember all the vehicles I've owned but most of them were f-150s. I currently have an Audi A8L TDI but the xB is my favorite car of the ones I've owned.

But I don't particularly like driving the xB on the highway and especially not on windy days.
