so i just got rid of my 2005 scion xA that was just miles from reaching 300k and imploding… picked up a 2006 xB with 134k on it.

i replaced the spark plugs, brake shoes, brake pads. rotors. installed an amp and bazooka tube, moved all my speakers over from the xA… changed the oil (it was overfilled and old), replaced PCV valve with a new one. i have an air filter but haven’t replaced it yet because the clamp is rusted and so far can’t remove…

anyways is there anything i should consider doing as with my xA i let things run too far along. i’m getting about 28mpg with mixed city/highway so pretty happy with that.

is there anything I should look out for? Next I’m gonna clean the mass airflow sensor..

thanks!

Welcome to the club! Maybe change your cabin air filter? - you've been very thorough tho- and when you can post some pics! Again Welcome

thanks. did the air filter today which was filthy and cleaned the MAF sensor. good point about cabin air filter… that will be soon too. i had to get a motor mount replaced too since my state has very strict inspection and it came from a neighboring state with not so strict inspection.

next i want to get a hitch receiver and better bike rack. my xB has plenty of scratches and dings to give it character which it needs to have to haul my toys!

Welcome to the club slugbait. That's my favorite color that these xB's came in.
At 134k miles those valves have enough carbon built up to do a cleaning. I recommend a can or two of https://www.oreillyauto.com/detail/c/gumout/gumout-valve-cleaner/gum0/540028 valve and turbo cleaner.
You will notice the difference afterward.
You can spray into the small pump hose which leads into the top of the throttle body. Read the instructions on the can, watch a 'how to' video. It's an easy matainance task that's worth it.

Tip: Wear latex gloves. It burns the skin. Make sure all your windows are closed and the dash vent is switched closed to interior recirculation.
Here's another help for doing this. https://www.amazon.com/Replacement-...zUmd2lkZ2V0TmFtZT1zcF9tdGYmYWN0aW9uPWNsaWNrUmVkaXJlY3QmZG9Ob3RMb2dDbGljaz10cnVl

Have fun cruising!

Instead of Gumout, ( nothing against Gumout) try ATS. Automotive Test Solutions- you add it to the oil, run the car at 2000 rpm for 20 minutes ( or go for a drive for 20 minutes) and then change the oil. ALL the carbon build up will flush out during the oil change. Mechanics swear by the stuff. The pack comes with a fuel cleaner that absolutely cleans the fuel injectors and the entire fuel system. Don't think so? Scotty Kilmer ( who doesn't get paid by ATS ) says you'll notice the difference almost immediately He uses it all the time- hate him if you want- The only caveat is the carbon cleaner and fuel system cleaner are $60.00 for the two, and you can't get it at Autozone, you have to order it. Idk why I didn't mention it before, but it's the best option for cleaning the systems. My order, is definitely in the very near future. Just an FYI.

What it be xB.
I just wanted to clarify.
You are absolutely correct. The ATS additives do work. I've used this 2 pack myself and I also recommend them to anybody who is interested.
Valve and turbo cleaning is different. This cleans the intake and exhaust ports of the valves. Which doesn't get cleaned very well by fuel tank additives or engine flushes.
I recommend Gumout and Berryman's brand because these cleaners are foaming as opposed to a liquid style cleaner. The foaming agent is proven to reach more carbon build up than a liquid agent. It also has been proven to not hydrolock the combustion chambers.

Food for thought.

What it be xB.
My Dad was an auto mechanic and had his own shop. So I've been turning wrenches ever since I can remember. Sometimes I forget everyone is at different degrees of experience. But if you really want to 'baby' your new baby, than I recommend this service every other oil change. Once you've done it, you'll do it again. it's that easy. Click this link and off you go........Intro Video for #2611 Intake Valve & Combustion Chamber Cleaner - Berryman Products

P.S. Forget I said hydro lock. 👊🤙

thanks i don’t want to baby my baby i just want it to get to 300k (hopefully +) like my xA did with minimal effort but don’t mind some elbow grease in the process… like learning new things and getting my hands dirty.

i changed the disgusting cabin air filter today that was probably original. my brakes squeak a little bit so i might have to get back in there with more anti-sieze. i will upload a few more pics of my new ride.

ATS 505 suggestion of doing it every two oil changes seems excessive. That is the only thing I question here.

I'm considering doing this and the gumout with a big span between. No worries. But its a tough choice to rock the boat on a situation that is really good. My box drives amazing for a car that is under 100hp

well, I ordered the Berryman intake cleaner. I found the YouTube video on their channel on how to use it but quick question. would it be possible to disconnect the hose just past the air filter and spray from above or do I have to do it by the intake… I think I know the answer but I figured if I could do it that way I’d be much easier unless it is not advised. thanks!

here is the how to video directly from berryman. i might give it a shot tomorrow. you basically have to disconnect the hose directly into the intake that is below the hose connector where the Mass Flow Sensor is by the air filter. it’s a little tougher to reach but doable. my hose clamp bolts are pretty rusted and makes me nervous but i soak them in PB blaster to make them a bit easier to manage.

video

my mileage dropped from 28 to 24 mpg but i think it has more to do with city/highway driving and i was spoiled with my xA getting closer to 32. i’m not expecting these treatments to be a miracle cure but i do hope they make my engine run a little smoother and maybe improve some efficiency.

When I originally got my stock xB it got around 31 mpg. Then I ended up putting very light wheels and tires and my economy went up to 33 MPG. Keep in mind I kept my wheels the exact same size as stock just went wider.

Now I drive it to fun to do something as silly as measuring MPG but I definitely did that religiously for a little while.

i have a roof rack with cross bars and j-bars for kayaks which add drag as well as a trunk rack for my bikes. i’m about to add a hitch receiver and bike rack that attaches to that so none of that will help my mpg. a lot of variables i know but i do feel like the idle should be smoother at least.

Throttle body..takes about 10 minutes...

#33 ·
Should be able to loosen clamp on hose directly attached to throttle body. Spray just a few squirts in and let sit for a few.wipe clean then open flap and do the same. Hook it back up and you can reset your idle if needed.i would use the appropriate cleaner.its potent but don't need much.
Hope that helps.

yeah i’m shocked they charge that much for shipping!

i did some techron fuel treatment yesterday and drove like 60 miles and then did throttle body cleaning today…drove it around and seemed to have better idle and acceleration. amazon delivered berryman so i went and did that treatment as well… poor neighbors got smoked out when i started up the car and drove it up the street.

so for 150 miles on half a tank and idle feels a little better… will see in the long run.

i’m not interested in any aftermarket parts or an intake. i specifically sought out and bought a stock xB. besides daily driver, i use it to haul my bikes and kayaks on the roof rails and bike rack.

the k&n washable filters look pretty good because they should last the life of the vehicle.

I hope this doesn't come out the wrong way but my little xb performs pretty dam good and I've done nothing to the engine. Aerodynamics are are made for this car for some reason. I must agree with the intake I put one on drove around the block and took it off..bought a pedal Commander. Best move ever. It just changes response time on the pedal.no chip no nothing. Not trying to go fast just utilizing what's there. And do the big 3 as well. You won't believe it..

#43 ·
that’s great! i just did a fuel fill up today and got 26mpg. i’m coming from an xA that i got rid of with 300k miles and did nothing to it (except routine maintenance) and it got over 30mpg with the same type of driving.

i’m just looking for anything i could do to possibly mitigate neglect from previous owners… like the super filthy air and cabin filters and engine had 5 quarts of oil in it.

never heard of pedal commander but looked it up… i don’t want to spend $300 for it but maybe some day. not sure what the big 3 is?
