Shuddering (while in drive)

283 Views 10 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  ‘06 Toast Temp.
My daily is an automatic '06.
About 3 weeks ago, while at a stop light, in drive, she started shuddering/strong vibration. This has never happened before. The spark plugs are 10k miles new. I put various fuel cleaners in every other tank of gas. I drive 75 +/- highway miles a day and I do drive her like I stole her. Average 80 +/- mph. She runs strong with usually a smooth idle. She has 160k miles on her.
I checked out the exhaust, No problems there.
I'm going to put new front end motor mounts in this weekend to see if this cures the shuddering.
Anybody have any experience with this and there toasters?
Hit me up!

Check all vacuum hoses at their source and at the component served; in the engine compartment and at the EVAP underneath the xB. Ensure hoses are not loose, brittle, or cracked.
Review Gen1 Scion service bulletins for the idling issue.
Hopefully this is something simple.

Okay, here's the update:
I took the time to check out the vacuum hoses. Nothing unusual stood out.
I replaced the front motor mounts. The passenger side motor mount and the drivers side tranny mount.
There was a small improvement, but nothing significant.
Then, over the following week I installed: a new
-speed sensor,
-camshaft position sensor,
-crankshaft sensor and a
-VVT solenoid sensor
It is recommended to change the oil and filter when replacing the VVT solenoid.
So I did.

The car has woken up out of it's slumber and doesn't have a shudder as it did before.

Note: This car/toaster is the easiest vehicle I've ever worked on. It looks like a toy and it is like working on a toy.
Fun!!👍👊🤙

I hope this info. helps someone else down the road.
Here are some pic's to peep at.

Thank you sooo much for the update! I just picked up an 06 and it seemed unusual the way it would shudder at idle in drive. It wasn’t terrible so i thought maybe these cars just did that. I was thinking maybe i had a bad motor mount too. Where did you source your parts?
Rockauto.com
I always purchase the higher quality parts.
I would never buy the lower quality (priced) parts.
If you can, always purchase Denso, NGK or hitachi parts for any Toyota.

You may want to start by cleaning the throttle body the flap can get very dirty and will make the car idle rough at times I cleaned mine it helped a bunch.

Nothing like the satisfaction of working on your car. Toast on.

Yeah. It's an online auto parts dealer out of New Hampshire. They sell crap :poop: (low quality) parts, cheap.:devilish:
Remember....🖖you buy cheap and you may weep.
What may be a short cut, sometimes can take you on a longer path.🚩
At least Rock Auto has a selection of low-high quality selection.
Buy quality.
👊🤙

P.S. Should I have used more emoji's?
