Positive Battery Cable Replacement

7297 Views 7 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  GregS
So I am looking to upgrade the battery cables on my 08 XB because they are getting pretty corroded and ratty. I want to put in a 4 gauge positive and 2 gauge ground. The ground is relatively easy to replace. The positive cable has two connection that I can't figure out where they go or how to get to them. Does anyone know how to take them out?
Thanks!

One goes to the starter, the other goes to the alternator on the other side of the engine and runs in a harness along the back of the engine. Both are in wrapped and taped harnesses that run underneath the battery tray and mounts. If you plan on replacing them completely set aside 4-5 hours that you can have the car down as you'll need to remove the battery, tray, and air box and undo the harnesses under all that. Then you have to put it all back together again. While you are doing it you might as well replace the line that goes from the starter to the main fuse box with an 8-ga line.
Here's a shot of the area with most everything out of the way. Ignore the mess I was in the middle of moving my battery to the rear when I took this.

Most of the cables run directly under the air box but I was in the process of moving them off to the side in this shot.

Oh wow that looks insanely complicated I will probably have someone else do it. Since I am having the cable custom made what are the specs? Like what are the lug sizes and what connectors are on the cable and what is the length
Thanks
And do you have more pictures?
Sorry, I don't have any specs for it. I used what I had laying around, but since I use to install stereo systems for a living I have A LOT of cables and connectors laying around. And nope, no more pictures.
Actually the starter lug is most likely a standard 5/16" bolt as I'm using a regular 1/0 connector on it in that picture.
