does anyone know what this socket/plug is for? i am replacing the radio, and don't know if it is needed. on the stock pioneer

yes, it was in that socket, circled

And I'm back to hd antenna, sat is different shape from what I've encountered

the am antenna is on the other side,, has an adaptor to make it fit, but maybe that is another antenna. you could be right.
