Thank you for contacting Scion.

I apologize about the late response. I spoke with our tech dept regarding your situation. They recommend the GL-4 only because in the long run it will be less corrosive to the metal inside the transmission and it will allow for better mechanical output.

Please feel free to contact us should you have any further questions or comments. We would be happy to assist you. You may contact us directly at 1-866-70-SCION or by email at Contact Us.

Thank you for your interest in Scion.

Regardless of what your owners manual says (mines an '06 and it says both GL-4 and GL-5), they are NOT the same oil:

---API GL-5 GEAR OILS ARE NOT INTERCHANGEABLE WITH API GL-4 GEAR OILS.---

The extreme pressure (EP) additives in most gear oils contain sulfur-phosphorus compounds that
can be corrosive to certain “yellow metal” components, if present at levels higher than
recommended by the equipment manufacturer. “Yellow metals”, such as copper and brass, are
found in transmission synchronizers.
