Brought to our house in Arizona yesterday by my nephew from San Diego. He picked it up there for us. Rather than drive it, he brought it on a trailer. Without registration, we have only driven it around the block a bit.

Manual transmission, shifts OK, but often gears clash going into 1st. gear. Can anyone tell me if 1st. gear is NOT synchronized? Most manuals of recent decades are. I drove manual for a lifetime (80 years old now) without synchronized 1st., using habit of always shifting into 2nd. or 3rd. first, at standstill, then into 1st.

Thanks for help!

The xB manual trans is fully synchronized (synchro-mesh), no double clutching needed. As you noted, older passenger vehicles often were unsynchronized (sliding-mesh), and shift timing was important. Still can find unsynchronized trans on large trucks and farm equipment.
