My neighbor's 2008 XB battery gave up yesterday after 9+ years. I took her to Costco and bought the battery according to Costco's book. There is only one choice for XB. So we cannot make a mistake. I put the battery in and the car started up. Fine. However, when I tried to tighten everything done, I noticed that the over-top battery clamp cannot be pushed down to lay flat on the top of the battery. It seems that the Costco battery is slightly higher than OEM Panasonic battery. BTW, there was no size group number on OEM battery. I had to use some strap to secure the battery for the time being and asked her to go to a Toyota dealer to get the correct battery today.

I am wondering whether there is something tricky about the OEM battery? Does Toyota intentionally make the OEM battery slightly different from generic battery so that owners have to get the Toyota battery? Thanks for the info.

Was hers the original battery? My replacement battery was shorter and came with a spacer that it sat on to get correct height.

our last 2 replacement batteries fit perfect in the wifes 09... If you are extremely worried about it go to the craft store and get a thick piece of rubber foam (not florist foam) cut you a piece to fit between the holder and the battery

Thanks for the reply. Her original battery was Panasonic. Came with the car. The Costco one is too high. So we could not put the clamp down. What are the brands of batteries you used? Maybe Costco battery has irregular shape?

IT's a bit weird but the 2008 calls for a group 34 battery size, which is 8" tall, while the 2009-up calls for a group 24 battery size, which is 8.5" tall. It is possible that you got a group 24 battery and it doesn't fit because she has a 2008. Before I moved mine to the rear of the car I had a group 34 battery and it fit fine. I believe it needed a slight spacer to make it tall enough. Double check what size battery was purchase.

What size ended up working for you?

I have an 2012 xb and I got a 24F replacement battery based on online vehicle battery finders, but I am also having a problem with the battery being too high for the top bracket. When I measured it, I found that the original battery is 7 7/8" tall, while the new 24F battery I bought is 8 1/8" tall.

Separately, my original battery (a Panasonic that does not indicate its group size) sat in a plastic tray and was in a foam casing that goes around the 4 sides. Are the plastic tray and casing supposed to be used with the new battery too?

It's my neighbor's car. She never came back for more help. She told me that she just tried to push the clamp to make it work. Haha. She really didn't care about it. So I don't really know. You have to figure this out yourself.
