As I had promised I'm doing a DIY Actuator Motor replacement on the First Gen Xb. Please understand that this is my first DIY and it may not be the perfect. I'll do my best to be thorough. From what I can see we most of our door locks are not working properly and never get fix because they are very expensive from $120 at the dealer, $90 at Autozone or Oreily's to $50-60 At the junk yards if you can find one. You can also try to find a 00'-05' Toyota echo at the junk yard, they should be the same actuator.

First remove the door panel. As you can see mine is the right rear. You need to remove two screws. First

Once you remove them both put them aside and remove the door handle cup (or what ever you call it. Its shown in the first pic) Now you have to separate the door panel by grabbing the bottom left side of the panel and just pull it apart. There is plastic clips holding it together but don't be scared of the noise it makes when you give it a good pull.

once its separated unplug the window switch with small screwdriver. Place door panel aside. As you can see it has a vapor barrier, just peel it back a little more than i have.

Here are some tools that you will need some screwdrivers and some allen wrenches. If you look close you will see that the screws holding the door latch are star looking. Just use a allen wrench that will fit and loosen them all and remove. The last bolt that need to come out will be on the front face of the panel by the latch its a 10mm nut loosen and remove. If you look inside the door panel looking at the door latch and actuator you can see a green clip use a flat head screwdriver and unclip it by flipping up the clip, pull the metal rod out and Now the whole latch and actuator can come out. To make it easier pull the black cable away and it should come out.

Unplug the actuator and Remove two screws to the actuator. Now its out and ready to be opened. you will need a heat gun and a xacto knife.(borrow or buy a cheap heat gun, you can probably use a hair blower) You don't need that much heat to get the job done. Start on low heat about two inches at a time. Not to much heat because it will loose its shape quick. Once you have directed the heat for about 20-30 seconds plunge the xacto knife and work it along its seam. Just keep working the heat and knife around it goes fairly quick. When your are all the way around be careful when separating the two half's apart. With something pointy pick the motor out (look at the picture)

If you notice the motor has a pressed on metal gear on its shaft.(New motor on the bottom) We need to remove it. Its not that hard but this is where you need to use whatever you got. I used a pair of dikes (wire cutters) Place the wire cutters around the shaft like if you are going to cut it off but Don't cut it off.Put tape around the handle so the pliers stay closed. Next you'll need a really skinny punch or drill bit to punch out the motor. Don't over do it with the hammer it will come out just take your time. Once its removed put the gear on the new motor by pressing it in or tapping it with a hammer be careful not damage the bottom of the motor. Luckily there was a nail hole on the plywood and the bottom of the motor fit. I tapped it down to 3mm of the front face. No than 3mm or else it will bind up. Put the motor back with the contacts facing down to match the ones on the case.

When the motor is in the case put on the other half just like you took it off. I chose not to glue it back (but that's just me) remember the two screws that hold it to the door latch I think thats enough to hold it in place and so far so good it works perfect. Really strong motor. If you test it without it being screwed to the latch be careful because and hold on to it tight it will come apart really fast. I would screw it on the test it. Put everything back how it came off. Make sure you align the black plastic tab with the corresponding hole. ENJOY. I apologizes if this DIY was not good but I hope it helps someone out. You cant go wrong with a $6.50 motor and couple hours of your time. I forgot to tell you the part number. MABUCHI FC-280PC-22125. If you look close you will see that the screws holding the door latch are star looking.
Those "star" looking bolts/screws are called torx head bolts/screws and I wouldn't particularly advise using an allen wrench to take them out. Using an allen wrench you run the risk of damaging the bolt/screw. Autozone and O'reillys both loan tools so I advise loaning them out if you don't have the money to buy a torx set.

You are correct rock box they are torx head bolts and its better to have the right tools but i went ahead and used an allen wrench and supprisingly easy to come off. If you have the time and money get the right tools. Thanks

nice job dubeexb06 my pics are similar to your ..but i did have hard time taking the metal gear out i used the heat gun and some pliers to take it out and i glued back on with silicon just to be save so water won't go in it when i wash my car..

AWESOME Job. I just had to comment, I didn't need me regulator fixed but i needed to know how to pop the door off... some B*[email protected]% threw up down my window and i get to clean it out tomorrow.... but thanks for the thorough pictures and directions.

Do you mean the interior door panel? It's like three screws and "pop" it's off. And i hope your vapor barrier is intact, cuz, ewwwww.

Door actuator motor

soberarmy did a write up on how to replace the little motors in the door actuators, and it's genius. My back doors haven't worked in a couple of years and the fronts were becoming intermittent, so I got the 4 pack of motors from ebay and changed them all.

The thread is closed and I'm still green to the forum so I'm posting here in hopes that someone somehow can help get this in the right place. The work I did was on an 05 xb.

1) When working on the front door actuators, it's not necessary to remove the entire latch assembly. With a stubby screwdriver or ratcheting style phillips, you can access the 2 screws that hold the actuator in place.

2) When removing the pressed on gear on the motor, I recommend that the punch or tool not be greater than .060. The top on the gear has an opening that is larger, but the gear appears to be tapered and smaller and the bottom. Using a larger tool could split the gear.

Im glad it was helpful to you. I still have not had a problem with the door lock and its been 4 months of heavy use, i have two young daughters and you can imagine the abuse. Remember that their might be better ways of doing this but with the time and tools that i had i made it work. People should have no problem doing this type of job. Im glad people find it useful. thanks to all.
