I did the same thing and I think my valve got stuck open for a while
and it would build pressure in my tank
as I used to have problems filling up the tank
the pump would click all the time when putting gas in
now it doesn't do that any more
I can reset the code and go 2 or 3 tank fills before it will set the code off again.
I was at throwing the 2 hundred at it for a charcoal box myself

now thinking outside a little
I did read somewhere also the system can be smoke tested for leaks
they have a smoke machine used to check car ac units for leaks
I don't have one of them but
I do have a smoke capsule that is a vial
you break the glass and smoke will emit when the liquid hits the air
they use it to find leaks in duct work for hospital operating rooms.
I might be able to try it
but I think right now I'm going throw my next loot at a new oem ac compressor
and some ac parts before dealing with this annoyance

at least I can reset the code and it will last me long enough to get thru
inspection like I did last time.
I will get about 3 to 400 miles before it goes off
I've been messing with this issue since I got this car for about 80k miles off and on
but its low on my priorities right now.
I would look into a smoke test it if I could if my back was against the wall
That is where I stopped for now.
