Backup Camera

Hey guys,

I've been considering for quite some time removing the rear wiper and placing a camera in the hole. I want to do this mainly for style points not really for function. My after market radio supports a back up camera.

Does anyone know what cameras I can choose that will perfectly fill the hole in the sheet metal where the wiper motor shaft comes through? Does anyone know the exact diameter of the hole?

Thanks

Are you Gen 1 or 2?

Yeah that guy does great videos. I've just never seen this one.
Dang. Thought you found what I needed. He's just using a license plate backup camera. I want a back up camera that goes in the hole in sheet metal where the wiper motor shaft runs through.

Does anyone know the diameter of the wiper hole in the Gen 1?
I found this,

it's 0.728" shank and 0.827" for the escutcheon.

If someone would let me know the size of the hole that might be all I need.

[/QUOTE Dang, after searching many videos on YouTube I haven't found the Gen 1 backup yet - drilled hole & everything. I apologize for giving the wrong video. Somebody in the club will chime in if you don't solve it first. Again my bad.
I'm just thinking I can't be the first person to think about putting a camera in the rear wiper hole.

I would pop the back cover off the tailgate and figure it out myself.
You have to think
Not many people have done it so it might take you a bunch longer to find one who has done it
Then it would to dig in yourself.
Before I go popping things off as you say. Lol. I'd love to find out that diameter of the hole and line up a camera first.

I'll wait about another week and then I'm going to go find some of the posts on the people putting in the blank to find out what size blank they're using.

I wonder if you could measure the camera on a Gen 2 ( find out its diameters) couldn't be too far off with installation being similar it cause its a Toyota hatch. 2013 - 2015 Just a thought. We'll get it figured out.
man i have been wanting to do this for almost 6 months now on my RS2i hope you make it work cuz i would sure as hell love some pointers :)

I don't know how it couldn't. It's also going to be cheap once we figure it out. I've been wanting to do this project for no less than 2 years. I finally got the itch.

If no one comes along within 5 more day with the info I'm going to go hunt down wiper delete posts and find the diameter of the plug they are using to fill the hole. Off to fight with kids. Be well.

The video posted above is everything I need to know about fishing the cables through the car back to the head unit.

The cameras cost under $30. I've even see one that allows the camera to be rotated to get the correct view and orientation.

Only thing left I would think is ensuring water proofedness. I may use some silicon or a gasket. Depends on the fitment I guess.
I've never once used the rear wiper. I wouldn't even know how to activate it. :D

This idea definitely has some merit.
So my idea has two steps. First I want to pull the rear wiper out and replace it with a camera. But the other part of it, is after you remove the rear wiper you will have interruptible power at the rear door from the wiper switch. I'm curious what I can do with that. I'm sure something interesting will come up.
So I did the research and it looks like a 1" escutcheon covers the hole which likely means the hole is 3/4". So it looks like the one above could work. It might even cover the hole. Also while doing a search I saw a post of another that said they wanted to do this but of course no pics.

I was thinking it would be cool to add foot well lighting to the xB and make the rear wiper motor switch be the interrupter. I think that would be pretty cool......
This is the one I'm thinking would be great if it would fit.

It is 0.886" around with a 0.984" escutcheon. Now I really need to know the size of the hole. I would rather not drill it out but I would.

Anybody know the exact size of the hole in the back door of a gen 1 xB?
