DIY Request section?

I have a couple thoughts on a new category in the DIY section. .

I did the https://www.clubxb.com/forums/f18/diy...tml#post530170 write up because I noticed in another thread that some people were asking how to do brakes and I couldn't find a write up by searching. . .

Soooo, I was thinking. . . does anyone want? / what are your thoughts on? / would it even be possible to? add a "requests" section to the DIY?

That way members could ask for help / request a new DIY that isn't already up?

I think it would be cool, except I wouldn't want people to just be lazy and post "requests" without searching

what do you think?

But that's how it always goes. And 9 times out of 10 there is something in the DIY section they didn't look for or didn't know how to find.

Re: DIY Request section?

i think its a great idea.... but if you request a DIY then you have to post your own pics when you do it or you get kicked in the teeth

Re: DIY Request section?

There really isn't anything "new under the sun" in regards to xB's these days (with the exception of the 2nd Gen, and they are coming up quick), and although searching may be tedious, it can provide answers to those that are willing to do the work.

Take a look at many of the questions that are asked... See a familiar trend? You've probably seen those same questions answered about a billion times (okay, maybe only a million times), and yet, they will come up.... Again and again.

Although the idea of "taking requests" for DIY's is valid, I can see where this will end up - Too many requests, and not enough people to take 'em.

Oh so tempting....

But seriously, we don't want to lose site of what the forum is all about: xB Enthusiasts! It's not (and will never be) a "self-help" forum. But, we have a World Class DIY section, and a bunch of great contributors to keep it that way.

Some of my best mods have come from our DIY's, and so I watch over that section to keep it pristine. And for those new DIY writers who find your threads closed after a bit, we Mods will do so to keep your thread from being bombed with too many questions, or "props" (I mean, how many times to you need to read "Good job", "Nice write-up", I'm gonna do that one day", etc).

Re: DIY Request section?

true... my headlight diy was nice and it made me smile with all the "good jobs" i got

but it also helps people make up their minds on what to mod next....

i donno DIY's are great to read up on but sometimes there not 100% crystal clear so a question pops up here and there...

but i know what your saying....

That's why I always suggest for those with questions to PM the thread starter.

Re: DIY Request section?

I wouldn't have known that anyone wanted/needed a DIY for brakes until i noted in this brake thread that people were asking so I just thought it might be a good idea to collect all the legit requests for help in one area so that some of the people who actually enjoy writing up DIY's and helping people out could see what is needed/requested. I have gotten a ton of help off clubXB and I wanted to give back so I did, and looking through a "diy request" section could make it easier to "give back" exactly what people are looking for.

along with the whole "being too lazy to search" my whole concern is pretty much exactly what DTRAIN has said:

But even if it doesn't get answered (at all or right away) it doesn't hurt to ask right?

as far as kicking people in the teeh who dont have pics, that sounds good to me, haha

and regarding the closing of DIY threads after a couple days or so, i agree with that, it makes it less of a mess and if someone needs more help PM's are a lot easier to get/read than keeping track of the questions that may be asked on my DIY write up

i kind of figured it would be too much of a hassle to do and keep "clean" of duplicate requests and such. . but it was just an idea.

Exactly! (Excellent brake write-up BTW).

Probably the biggest problem I can see (especially with new members) is they don't take the time to acquaint themselves with the site in general. They get too wrapped up with not being able to post pictures (It's the #1 complaint) to see what this site has to offer for both the inexperienced, and the seasoned car builders. So they don't realize that we have a DIY section.

Or, they post their car-related questions in the DIY section (My #1 complaint) without bothering to notice all the other threads start off with "DIY."

*Sigh* Attention: DIY = Do It Yourself! It's there to help you help yourself!!

I like this thread.

Re: DIY Request section?

fully agree. I've noticed a lot of those things too.

I've noticed that you've noticed (and pointed it out as well) more than a few times - Good job.

Just a couple. Trust me, I know how annoying it can be when the answer to a question is usually right under someone's nose!

But, your heart is in the right place, so it can be forgiven. I do appreciate the help.

Re: DIY Request section?

haha no kidding right. . it takes more work to start a thread asking a question than it does to type the same question into "search"

Youre right, its annoying, i'll try to be nicer while still being helpful

Re: DIY Request section?

Well, this one has pretty much run it's course. Again, the thought process is valid, but the work behind it would be monumental (and brain damaging!), so I feel it's safe to say this won't be implemented any time soon.

Closed.
