5th Annual "Box the Dragon"

This will be our 5th year running the "Tail of the Dragon" in our xb's. Our usual date has been the first or second weekend in August. Throwing it out there to let everyone know.

location? Im not familiar with this event...

"The xB makes a statement. It's not quiet. The xB is not the status quo, and its not going to compromise. Its radical change. Its a paradigm shift. It's a revolution, and it's loud. The xB is here to shake things up. There's simply nothing else like it on the road. "-Scion Model Year Magazine 2005

Re: 5th Annual "Box the Dragon"

11 miles with 318 turns, called the Tail of the Dragon. US129 on the Tennessee, NC line. Just Google, Tail of the Dragon. Also look at Killboy.com for photos and video from there. The xb's do quite well surprisingly.

---------- Post added 02-21-2014 at 02:29 PM ----------

Just got conformation that the bicycle riders/racers will be at Fontana Village the first weekend in August. So that will mean the limited menu at the Grill. So the second weekend would be better for us.

Re: 5th Annual "Box the Dragon"

I'm interested. Is this just a sat & sun thing or will it run for longer? Please list the hotels in the area where most xb'ers stay. It would b nice if we had a designated person to go to for majority of the info..... someone here who has been should take over as the unofficial xb go to guy.

Re: 5th Annual "Box the Dragon"

Unofficial format is like Russ said. Meet and greet Friday evening, usually at Fontana Village restaurant. Some cruise the Dragon after that. Saturday morning, find breakfast, top off tanks. Photo shoot at Fontana Dam. Cruise Dragon. Everything else we play by ear. Some just cruise the Dragon. Some go across the Cherahalla Skyway to Tellico Plains. Most head home Sunday after breakfast. Others leave Monday.

If you Google "Tail of the Dragon", there is a link to area motels and cabins. Fontana Village is nice but a little pricey. They also have cabins. There are several motels and cabin rentals in Robbinsville, NC. Most of us stay at Tuskeegee Motel, a 60's motel that is clean and cheap. Or if you want to stay in Pigeon Forge, you are about 1 1/2 hrs from the overlook on the West end of the Dragon. I will try to answer any questions you have. I live about 2 1/2 hrs from the Dragon.

I'll be there, though I keep reading about heavy police presence making it a game to give out tickets..
Anyone here ever had issues?

Re: 5th Annual "Box the Dragon"

Like Russ said, drive sane and no problems. Some days there will be an abundance of leo's. Other days may not see any. There are paved pull offs to be used if a bike or car is on your butt. Let them go by and flush out the leo's.

Our #1 rule at BITS and the Dragon, don't do anything to bring shame or unfavorable review to Scion or our group. You can have a good time without being an ass. There are plenty of those out there in the other car and bike groups.

There's also a pretty funny Jalopnik article.

Re: 5th Annual "Box the Dragon"

There is a place off the Cherahala Skyway called Joyce Kilmer Forrest. Lot of virgin timber in there. Several nature trails. Or drive through Cade's Cove and see old churches, houses and cemetery's. Usually see turkey, deer and even bear. But don't do like some idiots and try to get your kids close to bear cubs to take their pictures. Saw this first hand. Idiot parents got their ass reamed, but couldn't understand what the fuss was about. They we're tame bears in the park. Dumbasses, they are wild bear.

Re: 5th Annual "Box the Dragon"

The deer and turkeys are daily occurrences at my place. I've heard rumors of bears but yet to see any.

We've got bobcats, coyotes and a family of foxes that are fun to watch. Oh and rattlers too..
Here's a little 3 footer I found on my back porch last year.

5th Annual "Box the Dragon"-20130920_162835.jpg
Then again I live in the sticks and have 20+ acres of backyard.
Yes, I fecking HATE mowing season..
Here's a view from the tree line where I "stop" mowing.
5th Annual "Box the Dragon"-20120227_124411.jpg
That's my house way up there. There's another 10 acres I mow up front. Each year the amount I mow gets smaller and smaller (I've given up on the side lots!), soon I hope to outsource this task, but I may need a 2nd job to afford it.

I've been to the Dragon 3 times so far this year. Twice on the bike, once in the box (my son calls it the X-BOX). Never had any problems with police.

So far our group hasn't had any issues. But we don't drive fast anyway. Lol. Just cruise through so Killboy can get good shots of us. I want to set up video camera and video our group going through some of the twisties.
