Difference between 17s and 15s Wheels?

Hi everyone,

Well right now I'm running on 17x7 +38mm EV5 Enkei wheels. I'm looking at buying new wheels as I am tired of these wheels. Bought the XB with them all ready on them. I'm looking at maybe going smaller. I'm currently on DF210s. I love the fitment of my wheels and how there is barley any gap. If I go to say a 15 inch or 16 inch wheel this will make me have more gap right? Seems pretty obvious to me that it would. Also what are the pro's of going to a smaller wheel. Seems most people on here go with 15s or 16s. I know that there cheaper and the tire wall would be wider so better ride and mpg. Any other reason to go smaller. Thanks for any help with this. Looking at maybe going 16x8 or 15x8. Looking at this below is the ET the offset? Also posted the link to the site I'm looking at a couple of wheels on there.

15s look stupid.

Even 17s look weird when someone beside you has 18s. It depends on what you want to do with your car.

Case in point, 17s look fine on the Matrix but they look tiny here.

Dude I got it from on Craigslist thought stock height was okay. It looks terrible.

DF210s and 15s look bad too...

Re: Difference between 17s and 15s Wheels?

Zman,

I just want it to look nice to be honest and somewhat of a comfortable ride. I mean I don't mind the ride right now lowered and on the 17s I have. If this is the case should I stick to 16s and 17s?

16s are hard to find tires for.

18s look great, but you lose rubber the larger the rim... so they traditionally are less comfortable. That being said, 15s will have the best ride, but don't look as "cool" unless you're dropped, you stretch the tire a bit and have a big lip.

I have the MSR 229 and they're pretty cool for 15s.

15's are for the very low down, 16's hard to find tires, 17's look good, 18's look better but offer a crappy ride on DF210s (this I promise) I'm going back to 15" banded steel.

Re: Difference between 17s and 15s Wheels?

So I was looking at the below wheels. I really like this design in White love the black/bronze and even like the Tiffany blue seems different. This size of these are 15x8+25 or 15x8.5+15.

The second wheel design I like in the white and black/bronze. These come in 16x8+15 or +25 and 15x8+25 or 15x8.5+17.

The third design I only really like in black with gold rivets. Which comes in 16x8+25 or +15 and 15x8+25 or +15. This will be on the next post I'm at the limit for pics this one.

So my BOX is BOP. I'm leaning toward the first design in black/bronze just cause it's different not sure how that color would like on BOP though. Next design i'm leaning toward is the third one with the black and gold rivets. So input is always greatly appreciated on what design and color scheme would set my BOP box off. Also what size of the ones listed should I shoot for.

I have DF210's on KYB( echo struts/shocks) on 18' TRD wheels, see the difference next to the white xB, I believe on air and 15's.

When I was looking for a used xB I drove a lot of them with different sized wheels. That being said every one I drove with 17" or 18" wheels was hard as a rock. Even I didn't like the harshness of the ride & the cars felt much more slugish with the larger, heavier wheels. With 15" wheels the ride was decent enough for an around the town fun car. I decided to stay with 15" wheels since it was hard to find some nice light 16" wheels. I ordered some Advent Racing Storm S1 wheels in gray. They are super light at 10.6 lbs.

I didn't find the 16" tires hard to find though as you said. For fun I put on my old 16x7 wheels from my MR2 until my new wheels arrive. The tires are a little small at 205/45R16 vs a 205/50R16 but they look a lot better than the ugly steelies with hubcaps.

Re: Difference between 17s and 15s Wheels?

If you can get low enough, anything from 15" and up can look great on an xB. It all depends on what style you are going for and what you are willing to live with on a daily basis. My wife was fine sitting on DF210s and 215/35/18s for years. Except for not wanting to spend the money, she would do it again today.

If I were in your shoes, I would be looking for a lower offset 17 or 18 if you would like to stick with DF210s. If you'd like to go lower with coilovers or air, then the 16s would be a good choice. This is my car on dumped K Sport coilovers and 16x8 +20 wheels and 205/45/16 tires. I wish the fronts were available with slightly more offset (+25 would be great).

This is the same car on 18s with air and my wife's car on 18s with DF210s.

Her car now, filthy, with stock wheels and tires on DF210s.

Steelies and hubcaps never look good IMO. They should outlaw hubcaps as I see them fly off of cars all the time!

I've never been a fan of any slammed car. I love to lower a car for better handling but I hate to make it so low that you have to worry about hitting everything. I just saw a guy the other day rip off his front lip pulling into a shopping center because he was too low. He couldn't go in at an angle because of other traffic & had to go straight in at the last second. I'm fine with a moderate drop to improve handling & looks.

I did look at those wheels but I'm not a fan of them. Most are way too busy of a design but thanks for pointing them out. There was only one 15" wheels that looked good to me.
