DIY - Modified Door Locks

Finally got tired of smacking my arm on them and not being able to put my arm in that one sweet spot (for me at least) when cruising with arm out window due to door lock being in the way.

Asked around, searched a bit, and basically no info was found or shared. Soooo, i found a door lock i had laying around and practiced on it so when i went to do mine i wouldn't screw it up. Now for steps and pics on how i did it.

Tools i used:

Tape Measure
Masking Tape
Phillips Head Screwdriver
Flat Head Screwdriver
11/64 Drill Bit
Drill Press

stock door lock - unlocked

stock door lock - locked

pull plastic piece off by hand from the top - very little force is needed

remove phillips head screw from door handle

remove phillips head screw from cup handle

remove plastic retainer for door panel

on bottom of door panel you will feel a lip or edge to pull on - pull it with a little force (pictured is where the edge was for me to start pulling)

keep pulling till you are able to lift it up off the door panel rail where the glass slides up and down in track (keeping general terms to make it basic)

but dont pull it completely off, you still have to disconnect the wiring for the door panel switches.

plug is a 2 part plug - slide the locking clip on outer part of white harness plug and then pull the big plug out of panel (they dont separate its a 2 part plug if that makes sense)

once wiring is disconnected, set panel aside so it doesnt get scratched up by mishaps

what the door looks like w/o panel

now the fun part....you have to remove the lock by unscrewing it and then remove the white guide for the door lock rod

now put in the 11/64 drill bit in a press and manually turn it by hand to cut down on the possibilities of screwing it up. im sure a normal drill would work just fine and it really doesnt take alot of muscle to get the drill bit to drill thru the plastic door locks. the biggest problem that could happen is you bore it out using the wrong drill bit and its then too big to fit, or you use to small of a drill bit and it ends up cracking or breaking when threading it back onto the door lock rod

once i figured out which drill bit wouldn't mess up the door lock, i had to figure out how deep to drill it. screw measuring it with a tape measure for the right depth, i did it all by feel and to be honest it was the easiest way. the magic number for depth to drill was 1 1/4" (i started at an 1 1/8" and went bigger until it worked out thankfully it only took a couple tries)

locked and ready to go

hold the door lock in one hand and turn the drill with the other hand nice and slow so nothing gets messed up

all done....now to start reassembling everything the same way it came off

the finished product - unlocked

the finished product - locked

By far my favorite mod to date - amazing how something so simple can be in the way lol

Re: DIY - Modified Door Locks

First of all.
Very nice.

Don't get mad

However, if you are in an emergency situation and you need to pull the locks open manually.......yikes.

Also, given the inconsistency of the actuators, and their indifference to the cold, etc. you could really screw yourself only using the key fob.

Re: DIY - Modified Door Locks

I would never get mad for someone offering their insight - hell I encourage it so I can make a worthy mod for others to enjoy as I do.

I see what you are saying and that thought never occurred to me, so from here on out I will keep my fingers crossed the actuators don't go out any time soon. The only other fall back I have is to not shave the handles and keep the one key lock on drivers door as a fail safe. As for the other door locks, I did make a tool to stick in between the lock and panel so I can pry it up to unlock in case that ever happens!

good looking out - thx

Re: DIY - Modified Door Locks

Good point.
Could you just keep twisting them down by hand? I twisted mine another turn and added a piece of tape so they don't rattle at all anymore.

Re: DIY - Modified Door Locks

You could but it only turns maybe 2 full rotations before it stops/bottoms out. In order to get as low as me you have to cut some stuff up haha. But seriously, the white door lock rod guide keeps it from going any lower so that's why I removed it to make it flush with the top of the door panel.

Also with this mod the door locks do not rattle at all or at least mine didn't, and I just redid my sub box and it hits harder than before and they still don't rattle.

Good call on the electrical tape Zach - might come in handy for others not wanting to go the whole nine yards for this mod!

I would totally do this if I didn't have booboo's. I have to hang my arm further forward when it's nice and sunny outside.
