My 2009 cross country trip redux

I'd owned my RS3,0 for only 1-1/2 months, when I took it on a 7238 mile cross-country trip. I've never shared this trip with other xB owners, so here it is. If you've wondered what a cross-country trip in a 1G xB would be like, read on. If you like travelogues, this is your thread.

I originally posted this on an astronomy forum, where my userid is Snorkler. The original thread title was "Snorkler's Escaped - Again." The title refers to me escaping from an insane asylum, where they kept me for my own safety, and that of the general public. So this thread originated in a parallel universe.

The original audience didn't know the xB and it was a new vehicle to me, too. My intention is to copy and paste most of the original posts, adding explanations where necessary. I'll try to follow the daily gaps in the thread.

Feel free to add your comments. I'm interested in how this road trip report will evolve in this parallel xB universe.

Snorkler's Escaped - Again

He's heading towards Alabama and eventually Miami and beyond.

Tomorrow to Ely, NV or Beaver, UT. Tuesday to Zion NP, UT. Wednesday to Farmington NM Thursday and Friday to Carlsbad Caverns NP with a day in the area to see the bats fly out both nights. Saturday towards Austin TX.

The next week, Sunday to in Austin, Monday to Alexandria LA. Tuesday and Wednesday in Montgomery AL. Thursday to Jacksonville FL. Friday in Brunswick GA Saturday to Boca Raton FL.

More details and photos as the trip progresses. Free ice cream or lunch or hugs to whomever spots the Snorkler. He will be avoiding Interstate highways and searching for historic markers and quirky sideshows.*

*My alter ego, Snorkler, is a quirky sideshow, in his own right. I've been accused of being a Pishtaco, a Peruvian Vampire. Earlier in 2009. villagers blocked the road through their town refusing us passage. They'd heard that rich gringos were trafficking in stolen body parts, specifically the eyeballs of young boys, and insisted on searching the contents of our van. Even after we passed inspection, they forced us to turn around and retrace our route.

You'll need some help to find me, of course. Here's a clue: I'm driving a mean, green, toaster machine. And I'm driving it slow, averaging only about 50 mph. The reward is about 45 mpg, actually 46.5 over the past 1500 miles. I expect it to go down during this trip, to somewhere between 40 and 45 mpg, because I'll be running the AC, and pushing for distance. Look at these photos, and there's no mistaking the Snorkler when he's in your neighborhood.

One of my planned stops is with David and Valerie Clark, near Austin, TX. Dave Clark is one of the co-founders of the Texas Star Party.

Another of my planned stops is in Boca Raton, FL. Boca Raton is home to the highest percentage of millionaires of any city in the USA, thanks to IBM money. Snorkler thought it would be ironic to stay in Rat's Mouth, Florida in a $70 motel in his econobox.

Unfortunately, I'm a couple of bulbs short of a full pack, and far too many days short of enough time to do this trip the way I wanted to. It's going to be drive, drive, drive. I'll try to make an adventure out of it, but may need your help. I hope Gnoming Reporter finds a way to hitch a ride with me.

We had a spammer post last night, thus the ban hammer reference. Moving on.

My trip is not starting off well. I left my house this morning, and had no speedometer lighting. I found the dimmer rheostat and the clock/odometer lighting responded. I pulled into a gas station, and had no exterior lighting except headlights. So I drove back home and pulled all the fuses. They all looked okay.

I'll be taking the Scion to the dealership this morning. If the Scion's too bollixed up, I may switch vehicles, and then you'll never find me.

Jerry,

Thanks for the tip on Highway 17. I drove portions of it in Georgia, and like it very much. Unfortunately, my days in Florida are the most tightly scheduled of all, since we have airplane connections at one end, and cruise ship connections at the other. I'm only allowing half a day to see the Coral Castle in Homestead.

*reference to Hwy 17 is the old US hwy 17 that parallels much of I-95 up the east coast. It was suggested as an alternate route for me driving from Brunswick GA to Miami.

Richard,

Sack-of-tomatoes* tomorrow morning at 5 a.m. I want to get through it before its morning rush hour starts.

It took all day, but the Scion is fixed, and I'm heading out again tomorrow. I had installed a cruise control before leaving, and had a problem installing a clutch switch. There wasn't enough room for the switch, as a wiring harness was in the way. I took it to a garage, who didn't have the time to work on it, but they did clip some zip ties that allowed me to move the harness out of the way. Either the first mechanic accidentally cut two wires, or I stretched them and broke them. So the lights work. The cruise control doesn't.

While I was waiting for the dealership to open this morning, I was on the phone with the cruise control company. My installation passed all the tests the technician ran me through, but I ran out of time before solving the problem.

I'll try to make up time by skipping Zion NP, and use that time for getting the cruise control fixed at an authorized installer in NM. I'd budgeted two nights at Carlsbad Caverns NP, but I'll skip the park this trip to gain back my lost day. I've visited Zion and Carlsbad Caverns before, so I won't miss too much.

The main purpose of this trip is a Caribbean cruise with my middle granddaughter and my wife's grand-niece. They're both 11, so this may be our last chance to travel with them before they discover boys. Ports of call are Grand Cayman, Roatan (Honduras), Belize, and Cozumel. The girls will learn some Mayan history, if nothing else.

Purpose 2 is to visit the New England states with my middle grandson, and see Atlantic Puffins, Razorbills, etc. That will complete my remaining states. Once I get to Antarctica, I'll have visited all the continents, all the oceans, and all of the United States. Some people are content visiting their cabin on Lake Iowa every year, but I don't fit that mold very well.

Emanuele,

I'll be in Boca Raton July 11, and Miami July 12 and 19. If you're not too far from Rat's Mouth, maybe we can meet at dinnertime?

My wife calls it divine intervention, but my unscheduled delay allowed me to fix a flat tire on my stepdaughter's car. My wife drove me to a parking lot and left me there with the car. Unfortunately, the tire shop had torqued its pneumatic driver too tight, and I rounded two lug nuts trying to loosen them. Only one of four lug nuts budged.

I gave up, knowing my limitations, and called road service. The driver had a hydraulic jack with a 5' long handle. When his four way lug wrench and pneumatic driver wouldn't budge the lug nuts, he used the jack handle on a 1/2" socket wrench to finally break the nuts loose. His language wasn't nearly as bad as I expected, considering it was a 90 degree day.

Lots of pix coming, as the travelogue continues. The * reference to Sack-of-tomatoes above is a local reference to the town of sacrament, Sacramento.

Re: My 2009 cross country trip redux

I've been to "La Tomatina en Reno" where they threw 50,000 tomatoes at each other, but it was held in an enclosed space where I couldn't take my green machine (nor would I have wanted to). I watched the mayhem safely from a distance .

I've seen a lot of Spain when I worked there, but not the Valencia area. My favorites were Casa Mila and Casa Battlo in Barcelona. Antoni Gaudi was a master.

Yep, one of the pluses of being retired.

Dropping from the US 50 summit to Ely, I averaged 58 mpg over 40 miles. Driving from Reno to Ely, I averaged 50.8 mpg over 316 miles.

Tomorrow I'm going to try to get to Albuquerque to get my cruise control working. The manufacturer has two installation shops there, and if one of them can take my car in on Thursday, I've got the day to spare.

There wasn't much time to take in the wonder.

Re: My 2009 cross country trip redux

my car earned the title "The Brave Little Toaster" by successfully completing a mountain grade dirt road covered in ice and snow melt. Almost went over the brink a coupla times with a carload of screaming 12-year-old girls.

When we got to the stopping place the kids all hugged and patted the muddy Toaster and proclaimed him "Brave" indeed.

never volunteer to take kids camping unless you are familiar with the roadways. good thing toaster was still stock height at the time!

i would be in the middle throwing tomatoes btw. never pass on a good foof fight.
