Red face Newb here....

Just picked up a clean 06 XB as a new daily beater

Has a bunch of mods (header, exhaust, cai, wheels, lightweight crank pulley, DVD, etc.)

PO is giving me all of the original parts which I will most likely be converting back to

This will be my daily commuter car in the middle of the Bronx and the last thing I need to worry about are fancy doohickies that will most likely get stolen

I figure I'd join up and learn about whatever it is that makes these goofy looking cars special

Thanks

The light weight crank pulley has to go and so will the CAI and fart pipe muffler (drone is terrible)

Header and high flow cat will stay, but only because he didn't keep the originals.

Neon will most likely be removed as I'll never use them

If there's a classifieds section here, I'll post them up as soon as I can

Re: Newb here....

So earlier today I put her up on the lift for a quick checkup, a full fluid PM and to pull a few mods cause I have a 1200 mile trip back to NYC in the morning

Yanked out the lightweight pulley and replaced it with the original....

Pulled the silly fart pipe muffler and replaced it with the original....

Attempted to pull the CAI to replace it with the factory air box, but unfortunately, it has an aftermarket intake that kinda puts the throttle body in the way of the plumbing, so it looks like I'm stuck with it cause I didn't get the OEM manifold

Still, the difference in sound with the factory muffler is night and day

Not sure what I'll be doing with the stock steelies....

At first, I wanted to swap the tires back to the steelies and sell the current wheels, but then the thought of how fast Toyo steelies rust in the Winter came to mind

I figured I could just keep them as a spare set and throw some Blizzaks on them for the Winter, but then again when the big snow hits, I'll be chillin in my Land Cruiser

I'll most likley just throw all the leftover parts on CL for the locals and let my shop sort it out....

Re: Newb here....

curious why you pulled out the lightweight pulley? could you tell any difference between that one and the stock one?

A lightweight crank pulley is one of the worst things you can do for your engine

Sure, you might free up a few hp at best, but by removing the harmonic balancer, you reduce the longevity of your engine significantly due to excess torsional vibrations that would otherwise be reduced/eliminated

You don't have to take my word for it though

ATI - The Dangers of Power Pulleys & Understanding the Harmonic Damper

Harmonic Balancer & Drive Pulley Weight Is A Good Things

I have an ATI damper on my Road Runner (built 440) and a Fluidampr on my 5 window coupe (481 Stroker BBC)

I'm sure you'll see a ton of people who claim to have had zero issues with their lightweight pulleys, but why even chance the overall life of your engine over a few measly hp

I've decided to throw them up on Craigslist and just use my Land Cruiser during the Winter

Re: Newb here....

thanks for the info. i read some about the harmonic balance, but then there were many who said they didn't have any issues.

Re: Newb here....

Just drove the XB back home to NYC yesterday without issue

DVD and Pandora really made the trip easier when I hit traffic.

I bit harsher ride than I'm used to with my Land Cruiser, but way easier on the wallet (lucky to get 10mpg on the LC)
