I don't really notice what my mpg readouts are first thing. My house is five blocks from the road I take for the first 11 miles of my commute, and even leaving at 6:15 AM I have to pay attention to traffic. I re-set my UG trip mpg every time I fill the tank, so it doesn't give a good snapshot over a short drive. The instant mpg readout re-sets once per second, so it's too brief.

My FE was easier to monitor during the drive to my last job - I usually drove during off-peak hours and there wasn't much traffic that required my attention.

My best FE comes in between highway and city - suburban and exurban boulevards with 40-55 mph speed limits and stoplights spaced about a mile apart, on average. I try to find those routes, since they move fairly quickly and don't burn a lot of gas.

Your advice is better than Darrell's, although he is the master.

Your advice is common sense stuff that can easily be implemented. Honestly, I didn't think that avoiding short trips would have that big of an impact, but it's huge. Ditto with planning alternate routes that allow better mpg. Those two pieces of advice have improved the mpg more than I would have guessed.

When starting the car, in the summer mornings, what kind of mpg do you see for the first 5 minutes or so? Does your average mpg drop to 30, or does it drop to 20 mpg? I'm trying to see what kind of hit I take.

Also, do you personally get better mpg on pure highway or in pure city driving (stoplights every .5 miles)?

    Steve,

I'm getting my highest mpg ever, even while cleaning out the injectors as you advised. I started P&G in the city and it seems to be helping.

Best for me is 35 mpg, but that's after 2-3 years of working on it.

Question: How bad is mpg first thing in the day? The temp is warm, so does it warm up much quicker, and get to regular mpg faster than in the winter?

When you pulse and glide when the engine is cold.....what kind of mpg do you get? In other words, is there anything you can do to get good mpg when the engine is cold?

Steve, I read that you mentioned something about either brake or power steering fluid.

I can't see anything in the manual about replacing either of them. Should I and if so, at which interval? I have a '06/73k and never changed those fluids. Thx.
