Switching to royal purple synthetic
Hi guys. I'd like to ask your inputs regarding changing my oil to Royal purple 5w30. I'm not sure exactly what kind of oil was used beforehand as I've just bought the car recently. It's at 83000 miles and I was wondering if you guys think I should go through with it anyway? Thanks!

Re: Switching to royal purple synthetic
I've been kinda wondering that as well like if I should flush the system before I do it or not, or if it would even be worth it on my B with 110k on it. The only reason why I was considering it was because O'Reilly around here has it on special this month for $40 plus a K&N oil filter.

Re: Switching to royal purple synthetic
just go with mobile 1 synthetic or something similar. it's a xB...why would it need an expensive performance oil?

Re: Switching to royal purple synthetic
Ya I got that $40 deal as well with the filter. I'm mostly concerned of oil leaking because of switching from regular to synthetic. I have been using mobil one on my old car but since I've been hearing a lot about royal purple, so I want to try it out.
So basically I was just wondering if anybody thinks I shouldn't go through with it if 83000 miles is too high of a mileage to switch to synthetic if(?) the pre-83000 miles has been regular oil.

Re: Switching to royal purple synthetic
ah hmm I thought recommended for gen1 is 5w30 and 10w30 for colder weather? well not that im saying there's a problem with royal purple, the problem is when you switch from regular oil to synthetic at high mileage.

Re: Switching to royal purple synthetic
i use 10w30 cause of my driving i have a vary heavy lead foot and i need a oil that withstand my type of driving plus i living daytona florida it gets so damn hot out here plus the traffic it can brake down your oil fast due to all the stop & go
switching oil shouldnt be a prob i did that with my old 64 impala it had the orig straight 6 and it ran much better with full synthetic.. just when you switch you cant switch back to reg oil again.

Re: Switching to royal purple synthetic
This might be a dumb question, but what could happen if you switch to synthetic? I know it can be a good thing, but whats the down side?

The only thing is that you would be burning it off or it could be leaking threw small cracks in your car (dried out seals). Pretty much you would just want to keep checking your oil to make sure it ain't leaking/losing oil. I switched over to synthetic in my Intrepid before I junked it and I was running a lot better than before at least until the Transmission died.

Re: Switching to royal purple synthetic
I'm not a pro at this stuff remind you that is just what my Dad (who use to be a mechanic) told me to watch out for when I did it in my Intrepid. Just wanted to add that as a disclaimer.

Re: Switching to royal purple synthetic
ok thanks for the input guys. I did the switch yesterday anyway and I guess I gotta watch out for leaks and oil consumption now. I'll post back here again if I do find leaks and such.

A cool website testing certain oils:
"animegame.com/cars/Oil%20Tests.pdf"
I'm a huge fan of Mobil 1, but surprisingly did very poorly in this test.

Re: Switching to royal purple synthetic
One of the risks with changing to synthetic oil on a high mileage engine is a sludge. If the service was not performed regularly or the low quality oil was used and the motor has heavy inside build up of sooth and sludge, all the junk will loosen up and start clogging up the passages. That was the problem with many american V6 and V8's. Fro what i saw- Pennzoil was the worst oil that cocked up around the push rods and under the valve covers.
I'd recommend doing the next oil/filter change at around 2K miles once you switched to synthetic on a high mileage engine. And go 5K-6K between changes from then on.

Re: Switching to royal purple synthetic
This holds some relevance, but when I first bought the xB I used my three free oil changes within 7K and went full synthetic. at about 12K I dynoed the car and I managed to put down 101 lbs/ft and 97 whp compared to my friend who has the year xB with about the same mileage he only put down 89 whp and 98 lbs/ft. So it was arguably proven to free up a few ponies.

Re: Switching to royal purple synthetic
bought an 06' Salsa Red, almost 3 months ago, it has 83,500mls, I am switching to Synthic and leaning to the Castrol "syn." and also stepping up to 10w-30.
