I have been contemplating this mod since the first day I had my xB. Just lowering the stock handle a little bit was all I wanted and thanks to Cliff/bbszero I got a shifter I could experiment with and not risk messing up my car.
Basic removal and disassembly steps for the Auto shifter are available here:

I took some pictures in the process that may help someone doing similar repair or modification work. Exploded view of the shifter with all components:
Even though it has so many parts, taking everything apart is fairly easy and does not require any special tools. The only tricky step is removing the lever from the base. The inner push rod is held by the pressed pin that needed to be knocked out with the help of a punch and a deep socket on the other end:
That operation is only necessary when keeping the factory T-handle because the tube needed to be tapped at the new screw locations and the push rod needed to be shaved and rounded off:
One of the parts that can give problems during the car's life is the shift release solenoid (allows shifting only when the brake pedal is depressed):
Putting everything together is fairly easy. White Moly grease is used on all the parts that rub:
Routing the wires for the Over Drive switch and illumination:
They share the connector so the pins for OD harness needed to be unpacked from the plug during the disassembly:
And there it is: lower by 1.5" than stock. As subtle as this mod is, I am happy with it
