Automatic shifter overhaul and shortening project

I have been contemplating this mod since the first day I had my xB. Just lowering the stock handle a little bit was all I wanted and thanks to Cliff/bbszero I got a shifter I could experiment with and not risk messing up my car.
Basic removal and disassembly steps for the Auto shifter are available here: http://scionlife.org/Scion_Docs/2004...t/overhaul.pdf
I took some pictures in the process that may help someone doing similar repair or modification work. Exploded view of the shifter with all components:

Even though it has so many parts, taking everything apart is fairly easy and does not require any special tools. The only tricky step is removing the lever from the base. The inner push rod is held by the pressed pin that needed to be knocked out with the help of a punch and a deep socket on the other end:

That operation is only necessary when keeping the factory T-handle because the tube needed to be tapped at the new screw locations and the push rod needed to be shaved and rounded off:

One of the parts that can give problems during the car's life is the shift release solenoid (allows shifting only when the brake pedal is depressed):

Putting everything together is fairly easy. White Moly grease is used on all the parts that rub:

Routing the wires for the Over Drive switch and illumination:

They share the connector so the pins for OD harness needed to be unpacked from the plug during the disassembly:

And there it is: lower by 1.5" than stock. As subtle as this mod is, I am happy with it

School bus lol. Yes, I was going for more comfort with it. Also smoothed out the bumps for the detent spring so it doesn't feel as notchy:

I'll take pics of it installed but honestly it doesn't show much. Unless you put two shifters side by side

Wow that's awesome! I need to do that! I remember I saw some where a few years ago a shift boot for our auto stick, does anyone know where to find them?

Re: Automatic shifter overhaul and shortening project

I want to see if it's level with the front seats.

I've had mine bumped into neutral by a passenger's knee, if it were lower that wouldn't happen.

Re: Automatic shifter overhaul and shortening project

Zman it's still higher than the seats. I was only able to drop it 1.5" because i wanted to keep stock handle. You can do more with the aftermarket one for sure. Old DIY on that: http://www.clubxb.com/forums/showthread.php?t=5501
I'll try to snap a pic of it installed tonight.
Box Lover check Sponsored Sales in the Classified may be Redline Goods have the boot for autos. Scion Shoppe used to sell them but they closed long time ago.
Thank you Dion and Steve It was an easy project. Only cutting and drilling/tapping two new holes:

Factory screws are M4x0.7 thread so i had to get metric tap for $5.
