I think originally that started when the swing-axle cars (like old VW's) were lowered which resulted in unavoidable camber change. It improved the roadholding during hard cornering. And so it became cool. Besides the look that some people find desireable, it allows for wider than otherwise would be possible tires/rims to be used since with negative camber they tuck inside the fender without rubbing.

That's what I always thought. It started as a means of lowering a car further and improving handling, and today it's more of a style thing.
