Cataclean- Catalytic converter cleaner fuel additive

Hey guys,
I usually don't buy into hype with fuel additives, but I wanted to share my experience with people here on the forum. My friend has an '05 Camo that had a fouled up coil pack and she drove on it for about a month. I had to diagnose the problem by changing certain compnents, etc. I switched out the dead coil for another used one and everything worked fine after that.

Until the CEL...
The car didn't run rough or anything, but it was due for SMOG and a new catalytic converter being the likely culprit, I opted to test the cheap stuff out first.

Enter Cataclean:

Purchased at the local hardware store. Less than $30 I think. The CEL went off in 2 days and stayed off. I thought the grilles in the cat had some deposits from having burned rich for a few weeks. I suppose if the car had been driven really hot for a while, the deposits would eventually burn off. I decided to give it a try. The car passed smog last week with flying colors. Cat and motor have about 125k and are still functioning well. I think it was worth it.

I filled up with half a tank of 91 octane and added this fluid in. There are specific directions on the side of the bottle.

ETA= Soon enough...June '12, made it!

It just goes in the gas tank?
I know Seafoam and others need to go in the vacuum line which is impossible to do by yourself!

You can.
Just use any vacuum line. The easier way is with the brake booster.
-Unplug the hose on the brake booster
-put it in the mug with the seafoam and at the same time, give some air by openening manually the throttle body

I use seafoam one time each year and my engine never does strange noise

I just threw a code for the rear O2 sensor. Do you think this will help?

FYI I cleared the code and it hasn't come back.

It takes a while for your code to come back on.

Re: Cataclean- Catalytic converter cleaner fuel additive

If it takes a while to comme back, it's a common problem and it can be fix with an oxygen sensor spacer on the rear O2 sensor

If it come back quickly, it can be a damaged O2 sensor or you need to change the catalytic converter

Okay, I got the dreaded "3 lights of doom" this morning. Code read: P0420. Thanks to Victor reminding me of this thread, I made a run to Pep Boys and picked up a bottle of Cataclean.

I cleared the code, and will be sure to report back if the lights re-appears. Current mileage: 135,599 on the original catalytic converter. Worse case scenario: Replace that cat. Thanks again for putting this up, Joe.

BTW, how's your friend's car doing as of late?

Re: Cataclean- Catalytic converter cleaner fuel additive

Well, it passed smog with flying colors and the light has not come back on. There were about 8 problems at once around 120K, but since everything has been fine. I don't know how the thing is running on a daily basis, but it seems to be good overall. This is the same car with the door lock issue and coil pack issue...

I have question for the people that are having the cats go bad at low and somewhat low mileage, do guy use any additives like fuel system cleaner or injector cleaner to your gas regularly?

Re: Cataclean- Catalytic converter cleaner fuel additive

I use Sea Foam randomly in my vehicle.. I pour it directly into the gas tank and then I fill the tank up with 91 octane. It increases my MPG and all together helps the vehicle run better/cleaner..

I dont mean to be a thread jacker..

I will look into that product as well "Cataclean" Sounds like an amazing product..

CataClean $30 a bottle

Sea Foam $10 a bottle

Both are 16oz

Re: Cataclean- Catalytic converter cleaner fuel additive

So I've had this same problem for almost 3 years now and decided to give the cataclean a try before I try replacing parts.

So it's been 100+ miles since I've cleared the code and applied the cataclean. I dive about 35 miles a day to work and back and the light hasn't come on.

So the part I don't understand is that the CEL/MIL hasn't come on but if I connect my scanner to the OBDII port the scanner still reads a P0420 code. One one though. Before it would have two of the same codes come on (P0420 twice).

I don't know if I should try my luck and bring it to smog now or not.

Gumout Regane, Redline SI, Chevron Techron fuel system cleaners work well, they have PEA,but I am not sure if it will clean catalytic converters. They are not harmful when used moderately.

I use seafoam too but why put 91 octane in you gas tank? The owners manual calls for 87 octane. Couldn't using higher octane cause problems?
