Extremely Loud Squealing Noise

The Scion doesn't do it all the time but......When we start our 04 Scion Xb sometimes it makes this horrible, extremely loud squealing noise. If rev the engine it goes away. Took it to the dealer, they have no idea, but it didn't make the noise while we were there. It is the worst noise I have ever heard in my life. Getting ready to drive from Sacramento CA to York PA, 2800 miles.

Any ideas what this could be please let me know ASAP, leaving Monday morning noise or not.

Probably from one of the belts.

Not from one of the belts, we checked that as did the dealer. The noise is SO LOUD, that its difficult to tell where its coming from.

If it's manual, may be the throwout bearing?

Re: Extremely Loud Squealing Noise

I have thought it might be the clutch. Its got 82000 on it. I just flew in and bought it from my son, now I have to drive it back across the US. He says its been doing it for quite sometime now. It makes the noise in neutral.

Re: Extremely Loud Squealing Noise

If you pump the clutch pedal and the noise changes, it's likely to be the bearing. On some cars you can spray a little of white lithium grease onto the bearing but you need to be careful not to spray it all around the bellhousing. May help for some time.

Re: Extremely Loud Squealing Noise

Nope, pumping the clutch does not change the noise. Hitting he gas makes it go away, in neutral.

New water pump, new belts, we have been under the car when the noise is going on and believe me, if we could we would locate it. Just thought maybe someone else has had the problem. Very strange. You wouldn't believe how loud it is, its unbelieveable.

Re: Extremely Loud Squealing Noise

Check if harmonic balancer (crank pulley) is slipping. Never seen it happen on xB, but very easy to check so why not. Just make a mark on it and see if outer part moves relative to the inner part/flange.

Re: Extremely Loud Squealing Noise

it's VERY likely that there's a small amount of oil getting on the back side of the belts or water even from using the AC. when this happens, your belts WILL scream ridiculously loud for a short period of time with a probability of it happening often when first starting the engine.

this will happen with any vehicle period. sometimes it's not actually a problem, just the environment.

Previous Vehicle: New 2006.5 TMC 5spd manual Scion xB w/ Webasto 524 sunroof. 49900miles traded in

Current Vehicle: Used 2007 Black 6spd 4WD manual Toyota FJ Cruiser fully loaded. 57,450miles and on

Re: Extremely Loud Squealing Noise

I get a little squeal at first start up, but it goes away. Time for new belts here.

If it's not your belts, probably the muffler bearings.

Re: Extremely Loud Squealing Noise

I'm willing to bet whoever installed the now belts didn't tighten them correctly and thats the noise. Either that or you'r blinker fluid may be low. :-P But seriously I think its your belts being a tad bit loose, check the tension on the belt while the motor is off, how much can you move the belt?

Yeah, if the 1NZ-FE had a belt tensioner I'd recomend that, but it doesn't have any.

Re: Extremely Loud Squealing Noise

dude i have an 06 xb and i know what ya mean!! its this super loud noise and it sounds like it comes from the breaks! so what i did was i disasemblemed the rotor and break pad and noticed the breaks were still good so i i just cleaned the rotor and the breaks and assembled everything back and took it for a test drive and so far it hasn't made the noise! maybe it just needed a little air.lol hope it works in your case
