You Rocken' Satellite?

While doing my nightly classified browse, I came across a member selling a a satellite set up. I've always thought about getting satellite radio, but I don't know how often I'd use it. The cost of buying the unit isn't the issue, the $160-$450 a year is, especially if I'm not using it. I'm an ipod whore, that being said I also like to jump back and fourth sometimes, from ipod to radio to cd's even though there on the ipod lol.....

So

My question is....
WHO has it, and uses it? and is it worth it?

Re: You Rocken' Satellite?

Got it in both our family's cars. I do a lot of long road trips, & don't have a smart phone.

Re: You Rocken' Satellite?

I love having satellite, but I do drive long distance too. I have a smart phone, and pandora sucks after awhile. I do miss the local feel of regular radio sometimes, but the comedy stations are awesome, you can get good metal, and the classical station are usually on point.

Re: You Rocken' Satellite?

Obviously, I endorse you buying it haha.

The people I know that have it, swear by it. I personally just enjoy my iPod more. But, I don't like talk stations, or comedy, and are constantly searching for new music.

I do miss their electronic stations.

Gotta love a good Project Log.

Re: You Rocken' Satellite?

Our 2012 Hyundai Elantra came with a free 3 month XM subscription. Its OEM radio & the Alpine DVD radio that came in the RS3.0s have XM capability. After 2400 miles cross-country in the Elantra, I turned it on for the xB.

Re: You Rocken' Satellite?

Yea around town I find the commercial breaks shorter than on regular radio, but they tend to play things from everywhere. So having the phone hook up is handy on low interest times.

Re: You Rocken' Satellite?

There are no commercials on the channel I listen to the most, 50's on Five.

Commercial radio is really spotty out where I travel. Back east & in metropolitan areas, there's an abundance of choices. But you'll be lucky to find any commercial radio station broadcasting between Fernley, NV and Beaver, UT. Ditto Richfield, UT to Moab, UT. Or Farmington, NM to Bernalillo, NM, or El Paso to Fort Davis, TX, ad nauseum. When I have found stations, they're likely to be evangelical gospel, conservative talk, Navajo, or Spanish language programming - not anything I want to listen to.

In Chaco, I was 70-90 miles from the three nearest radio markets - Farmington, Grants, and Gallup. Albuquerque, Bernalillo, and Rio Rancho were 140 miles away. I tried to find NPR on FM on weekends to listen to Click & Clack & Prairie Home Companion. The boombox in the trailer didn't pick up NPR at all. My xB's radio found NPR in Grants, if I parked in the third employee housing parking space from the east. The signal broke up badly if I parked in the adjacent spaces.

There is no cell phone service in the park. Similarly, there's no cell phone service on the Prude Ranch, where the Texas Star Party is held. Out in the boonies, satellite radio rocks.

Re: You Rocken' Satellite?

I miss having XM sat radio... Howard Stern is cool and not as raunchy as most people think, I have heard alot of new music on sat radio that I would not have heard on censored local radio. Comedy stations are great and there are some dedicated stations to just one band. The static on FM radio is horrible but sat is clear but if you go into a dead spot it just drops out until signal is obtained again... I will definitely go back to sat radio and everyone I know who has it, loves it and will pay the extra to have it.
