I don't really notice what my mpg readouts are first thing. My house is five blocks from the road I take for the first 11 miles of my commute, and even leaving at 6:15 AM I have to pay attention to traffic. I re-set my UG trip mpg every time I fill the tank, so it doesn't give a good snapshot over a short drive. The instant mpg readout re-sets once per second, so it's too brief.
My FE was easier to monitor during the drive to my last job - I usually drove during off-peak hours and there wasn't much traffic that required my attention.
My best FE comes in between highway and city - suburban and exurban boulevards with 40-55 mph speed limits and stoplights spaced about a mile apart, on average. I try to find those routes, since they move fairly quickly and don't burn a lot of gas.
