xB's euro cousin: Toyota Yaris Verso/FunCargo

Hi! Making a project thread on my little breadbox that I recently bought. I would love to have a xB/bB, but sadly they were never sold here in Europe. I'm from Norway. But we did get a car built on the same platform, called the Yaris Verso (Toyota FunCargo in Japan). And a few weeks ago I bougth one!

It's not in great shape, but it will be with time, effort and off course, money

Over here, when you scrap a car the gov pays you about $500. But car dealerships often have sales campaigns where you get $2-3000 in trade-in for your old "wreck" as long as it is road legal and registered, if you buy a brand new car. This is a car like this. I bought it "as is" for about $800 That included the $220 in fees to change ownership of the car.

This is what I picked up from the dealership, it must have been a couple of years since it was washed:

The car is registered as a 2-seater "van" with a metal divider between passenger and cargo area. It has most probably spent most of it life delivering pizzas as a commercial vehicle.

Now it will be fixed up, vinyl wrapped. lowered and all the rest of the things necessary to make it a cool company car for my signmaker/car graphics business. Can't wait

Re: xB's euro cousin: Toyota Yaris Verso/FunCargo

Not only that, it was that very car that inspired me to get one of these It's a thread on it on a local VW forum that we're both members of.. my daily driver is a mk3 Golf

It was also that link that directed me to this forum, so yeah. hehe

The nice thing is that the Golf use the exact same wheels, so if I get bored I can switch it up between them. I have a set of fluorescent orange Rotiform NUE 8x17 wheels on the Golf now. And I just put some fifteens I had laying around on the FunCargo.

Looking at the photo of the FunCargo when I first woke and my eyes had trouble focusing brought this car to mind.

Wonder if Toyota's design engineers looked at the old Saab for inspiration.

I wonder what was going on in the advertisement department when they did the tv spots for this car

Re: xB's euro cousin: Toyota Yaris Verso/FunCargo

A project thread is no fun without pics! Lots and lots to grab hold of on this car, as it hasn't been well taken care of over the years.

I started with washing it properly. The OEM steelies looked like this:

Sprayed them with some German Scholl Rim 7 wheel cleaner, doing its magic here:

The germans don't mess around, so by just powerwashing them they turned out like this:

Sprayed the rest of the car with degreaser, it didn't look dirty before starting, but it dissolved a lot of dirt anyway:

Powerwashed the car again, then washed it with soapy water and washmitt. Rinsed it off and on to the next step. Used a product called Bilt Hamber Korrosol, that removes/dissolves metallic particles on the paint and wheel. From brake pads/discs and studded tires not least. This is a clear liquid that turns purple when it reacts with metallic particles. Usually you see some slight coloration on the wheels and maybe on the lower side of the body sides.

Well on this car it looked like a bloodbath!

You know the car has not been cleaned for a while when you have to remove moss from the inside of the door

Thanks! Looking forward to begin modding it, I just have to make it in order first.

Yep, my girlfriend and her wife both have that heritage. I just moved up here from Virginia, which was a very long drive across the country in the xB.

Re: xB's euro cousin: Toyota Yaris Verso/FunCargo

Talking of long drives, a friend of mine here from Norway bought a 1983 Winnebago on ebay, it was located in California. The RV was cheap enough, but when he was quoted shipping by boat to Norway from Cali, they wanted over $15,000 to ship it! That was 3 times as much as the cost of the RV.. End of the story was that he (and a friend) took a month off work, flew to California and drove the car to New Jersey, where shipping to Norway cost just $2500.

I was invited to join, but the though of driving that distance in a 30 year old camper van that had been off the road for 10 years prior to this, was mixed.. I'd love a road trip in the states, but not in a old Breaking Bad meth lab on wheels

But back to the FunCargo "restauration". The headlights were in such a bad shape that they looked almost frosted.

But with a bit of wetsanding, and polishing it looked promising:

wetsanded the whole headlight in preparation to polishing it to a shine again

Turned out pretty good!

I'm no detective, but when you find window tint in a knot on the divider wall inside, and the car has no tint on, I think this was a last cry of a failed effort

More to follow!

Re: xB's euro cousin: Toyota Yaris Verso/FunCargo

Heh, addiction is SOOO right as well! This was a total impulse buy, 3 weeks ago this type of car wasn't even on my radar.. Even though I see them everyday around town. But now I have more plans for this shop/work car than my beloved Golf that I use for audio competitions

Big mistake today... I messed around in photoshop a bit. Lowered it to a nice but still usable height, and put on my fave wheels atm, 3SDM 0.05s in 16".

Sooo simple to get the right look on this car, as it then went from this (as it looks now):

Re: xB's euro cousin: Toyota Yaris Verso/FunCargo

Well yeah.. but only in Photoshop though..

At least the lowering and wheels. But I do have gotten rid of the 14" steelies and replaced them with the white 15" alloy wheels in the non-photoshopped picture over here. These are some 15x7" wheels I had laying around, I used them on my VW Golf earlier. But they are a direct fit for the FunCargo, so I took them out to my garage, cleaned them properly, and spray painted them matte white.

I used Montana 94 graffiti paint, and one single can covered all four wheels "New" wheels for $7, how great is that?

My sister really liked that I got this car, as she managed to fill the whole cargo area with things to throw away after cleaning out her garage. I'm no psychic, but I can with great precision foresee this car being lent out for multiple trips to IKEA in the time to come!

Got a small package in the mail today, now the car should smell fresh inside for a looong time. Using one at a time off course, haha!

Re: xB's euro cousin: Toyota Yaris Verso/FunCargo

It sure can! But first things first, it need a proper deep cleaning of everything from carpet to seats. It's been neglected for years and years.

Best to do it properly, or else it will just smell like hot garbage with a lemon twist

On my way to work today all the engine and temperature lights started flashing. Not great news! But after pulling the car over and checking under the hood, it was just the fanbelt that had given up and disappeared. No idea on how old it was, but it was anyway on the "to do" list to change it. So now a new one is on the way, got someone to drop by a parts store. Will be up and running by tonight.
