Fitting a 3-way component system in a car that only has single speakers in the lower door, not even tweeters up top demands some serious modification.
I wanted the tweeter and midrange in the a-pillar, and the midbass in the OEM door location, so first thing was to find a spot for the top end:
The speakers come with their own mounting plate, so I traced around that to make a cutout:
Then it was time to adjust the plate inside the car:
I wanted the speakers more flush to the a-pillar, but the depth of the midrange driver demanded more space (not much clearance behind panel), so it ended up like this:
Next step was to pull speaker cloth over the panel and hotglue it to the pillar, to make a transition from panel to pillar:
Then soak it in polyester resin to make it hard:
Some bodyfiller and sanding (well a lot) later, and it was ready to be trimmed. I used light gray speaker cloth as it matched the interior pretty well.
It came out like this:
With speaker grille:
Now to do it all again for the other side
