Satellite Antenna

I just picked up my 09 xB and was surprised to see a separate antenna for the satellite radio. I know the remote dash mount radios have the remote antenna but I thought the aftermarket/sat ready radios had a direct connection to the car antenna. A friend had a Kenwood installed and it connected to the car antenna. does anyone know the deal with the Pioneer Sat upgrade?

Re: Satellite Antenna

don't get me started on Toyota's wonderful satellite radio options. Honda puts XM in all their radios, they all use stock antennas and it costs nothing extra. Toyota charges $500 bucks, makes the install a pain in the ass and has a tacky add-on antenna? WTF is that about?

Re: Satellite Antenna

Not to mention my dealer put on the antenna on with DOUBLE SIDED TAPE. Not the magnet ones like 99% of satellite radio uses, damn double sided tape. I took Sirius out of my car, but still have the stupid antenna on because I'm afraid I won't be able to get it off without damaging the paint.

Re: Satellite Antenna

thanks for the tip about that. how much did they charge to put it in? i priced six dealers yesterday for labor only costs in my area. i have all the parts and now i'll have to see if a magnet is possible, i would guess the kit has sticky tape. they ranged from $144 to $294! it pays to shop around!

Wait for a hot day, or hair dryer, and slide some dental floss under there and off it will come. Just like debadging.

Re: Satellite Antenna

My second antenna is mounted right behind the stock antenna, not real noticeable. I didn't know they used double sided tape to apply those i thought they were all magnets. Going to check mine right now to see..

I am po'd now that I know they stuck it on with tape. I would have never let them install it had I known that. Why they can't use the magnetic style I have no idea. Bunch of Dumazz's. Wonder if an audio shop can change it to using the stock one instead?

Re: Satellite Antenna

i had mine on the right side of the dash corner and it did ok, reception sometimes would go out on me. i ended up putting it on the outside on the cowl by the wipers. havent lost a signal yet, and is small enough its almost unnoticeable.

Re: Satellite Antenna

Actually a double sided antenna would be better. The magnetic one would have more of a chance to move around, therefore scratching the paint. A double sided one is stuck there and not hurting the paint at all. You can peal the double sided tape off the car pretty easy. Just needs to be warm. Think of it this way. Alot of body mouldings on vehicles are double side taped. They are done at the factories that way. I know on my 07 Tahoe, they are all double sided. Pulled them right off with no issues with the paint at all.
