Thumbs up car sound system?

well i was thinking of buying an alpine pdx 5 channel amp and a jl 8w7 sub but the amp only shows for 2/4 ohm....the jl w7 is 3 ohm....is this amp will work with the sub or not? any suggestion.....do i need to get 4 channel then get a separate amp for the sub......

which do you think is the best speaker component system between infinity kappa perfect, jl xr650-csi, jl c5-650, pioneer ts-c720prs, polk mm6500..... everyday i listen to hip hop, r&b, pop, alternative rock, hard rock, electronic/dance, metal, love song......

Re: car sound system?

you will need to get the w7 its own amp, the 500/1v2 for the w7 and the 300/4 for the doors

Re: car sound system?

I had a W7 12 with a JL 500/1 amp. And a Kinetik power one hundred farad cap. And it would just cut out at mid to high volume. So I took it to a car audio shop and thay ran tests and said my alternator wasnt big enough to run it. The W7 takes a lot of juice to run!!!

Re: car sound system?

That 8" W7 can get louder than some 12's, it's an awesome speaker for sure but requires a bunch of power and a decent size box too. Why don't you just get a 10" or 12" that doesnt require you to have as much juice since the box size will be about the same.

Re: car sound system?

I'm not as brand conscious as most and don't follow what's the latest hot brand so prolly not the one to ask. Any ten should do a good job back there, the less expensive models don't have as high power handling so wouldn't require as big an amp and would be a better match for that 5 channel PDX amp that your looking at. I've got a couple of PDX amps myself waiting to go in my xB2 when it arrives. You could fit two of the Elemental Designs SQ10 subs in that back spare tire area AND run them off of that amp......those speakers only cost about $70 a piece....Elemental even makes a box to go back there if you don't want to make one yourself. I had a couple of them in my first gen xB under the seats and they did a fine job, just don't plan on entering any soundoffs using them. If you go this route, since they don't cost much and your not gonna have much power I think you'll be much happier using a pair of these subs rather than one.....if it's too much sound you can always turn them down at the amp.

Re: car sound system?

i ran the 12w7 with a MTX amp (8800 series i think), and it sounded great, till it was stolen, but i never had problems running it, i didnt have a cap or a yellow/red top battery and it was on the stock radio.

as for the components, if you want everything to match the 300/4 pushed 6 components in my mustang (12 speakers total with the tweeters) the jl amps do have a tendency to get hot quick, but their good amps

Re: car sound system?

In my gen1 xB, over the time I had it I ran 2 Audiobahn 15's(sealed), 1 Audiobahn 8"(ported), 1 eD SQ10(sealed), 2 eD sq 10's(sealed), 1 JL Audio 12w6v2(sealed).......once set up they all sounded comparable and did a fine job.....The difference being that the JL and the 15's needed a lot more power, the JL is a well built driver but expensive and not leaps and bounds better sounding mind you, but better none the less.........the single 8" did a fine job for it's size but sounded a little thin and so did the 10" till I added another, the tens were amazing considering their size and the size of they're tiny enclosures......I was skeptical that they'd play low until I finally got them hooked up! Lol. I liked the sealed boxes better and sounded much cleaner than the ported box did playing the lowest notes to my ear. That's my experience in my car, hopefully others will chime in on their own systems for you as well! Happy hunting and good luck!

Re: car sound system?

Since you want the Alpine amp, I suggest an alpine woofer, carefull though, a 10 type R can soak up all the power from a m1000 alpine mono amp.

uhh.....no, sorry
jl subs are superior to alpine. i love alpine, but jl beats it. just cause you have an alpine amp doesnt mean you need an alpine sub. im running an alpine m2000 with an Orion H2: sounds awesome
and the type r is a 500 watt sub.......how is that going to use up an entire m1000?

I dont know, but trust me it does. Im sure it could power a bigger rated sub. I had my 10 type R on a 400 watt alpine mono amp and it would sound good but would stop getting louder at about half volume. It needed WAY more power. Now with the 1000 w mono amp, it gets as loud as I want it. But seems it could use even more. My M1000 amp is HOT after a long ride.

Oh and I agree, JL subs are the best, but for the price of a TYPE R, you would have to get JLs cheapest sub. Which would make me want an alpine over a JL. One thing that JL has over most other speakers is the eficiency. They just turn power into noise really well!

Re: car sound system?

well, i had that type r for a while. it did ok, but there really are better subs than alpine. plus, i got that orion sub a couple months ago and it absolutely blows away any other single sub i've ever heard. every dealer that i talked to said that, in their opinion, the h2 and newer hcca is far better than any other comparable sub they sold. it's in the same price range as a w7 (even a little cheaper) and has a 4 inch max excursion and 2000 watts thermal handling.

plus, considering that it is designed to be a spl sub, and that i have it in a ported box, the sound quality is excellent.

so to directly answer your question, im done with alpine cause im on an Orion streak right now

Re: car sound system?

Hello!! I have been watching this post and I just wanted to say a thing or two.If you want to go with JL then by all means go for it. It is a good product, But there are a lot more products out there that are better or as good for a lot less. Just do a little research. As far as the type R it may say 400 watts but I am sure it can handle more! Not a big fan of Alpine subs but any company that make a good sub always under rates the stuff. For example I have 4 -8" Alumapro subs in a sealed 2cuft. Downfired box on a 600watt Alumapro amp. That Has done a 144.5 on the dash sealded up pn a Termlab. And the kicker is it still sounds GREAT for SQ. I use it as a Demo at shows Clean and semi loud. I have had 1 of these 8's that are rated @ 150 watts RMS and 250 peak on 500 watts as a dailey driver. And this was not a cheap amp. It was a true 500 watts @ 4 Ohm. My point is shop around dont just settle for and OLD Name or a big Name brand. You can get Quality at a cheaper price.
