Question Best Aftermarket Remote Start?

I don't really know anything about these, but I definitely don't want to pay for Scion's overpriced option. I'm hoping to get one this weekend or next, since it's starting to get colder here. What I'm looking for basically is a good remote starter system for around $200 or less. I don't NEED other fancy features with it, but if I can get security, or auto windows with the remote, that would be cool too.

I'm also curious what happens to your stock keyfob when you install one of these. I would assume that most (all?) require you use their own remotes. Are there any options that let you use the factory key? Does Scion's option let you use the factory key? I'd almost be willing to pay for the factory system if it meant I didn't have to carry another remote and render the buttons on my key useless.

Re: Best Aftermarket Remote Start?

I just picked up a Viper 791xv...which is one of the sweetest set ups in remote start and alarms for under $200... at gilgool.com

Re: Best Aftermarket Remote Start?

You can get a basic remote start w/ keyless entry for 280-350 installed

Re: Best Aftermarket Remote Start?

I ended up getting a fairly generic one installed. Nothing fancy, but it gets the job done.

Re: Best Aftermarket Remote Start?

Is this for a manual or automatic? I've got a manual xB and have been thinking about getting a remote start system for my car as well. Anybody have a suggestion for a manual xB?

Mine's an automatic, so I'm not sure about how it would work on a manual.

Yeah, me either. I've heard that remote starts exist for manuals, but I'm not sure how it would work.

Re: Best Aftermarket Remote Start?

I'm have a remote start installed in my manual '08 on Monday. I orginally went with a Viper system, but changed to a Compustar when told by the installer that they've been having trouble with the "manual reservation" system on the Viper.

The "manual reservation" system is what allows you to legally(?) and safely auto start your manual. Basically, when you arrive at your destination, you put the car in neutral, make sure no pedals are depressed, and engage the parking brake. Now you can remove your key. Your car will continue to run until you exit the vehicle and close the door. The engine will now shut off and you're all set to start the car remotely.

If you got a combo remote start/alarm, keep in mind that the system will most likely arm itself after the engine shuts off, so make sure your keys aren't in it!!

The above information is my interpretation of what I was told by the installers. Once I get the car back Monday night, I can post more.

Re: Best Aftermarket Remote Start?

Picked up my box last night after having the remote start/alarm installed...initially, I'm happy with it...it was nice to have it started and warmed up by the time the gf and I bundled the little guy into his car seat...I've yet to check the range, but it definitely seems to be affected pretty heavily by buildings...I'll continue to update as I use it more during these cold months...as far as the manual reservation system, it works as I posted above...one thing that's a bit irritating is that if you open the doors at any time after setting the system, you need to reset it...it's a safety feature in case you "accidently" put it into gear, but it's a little irritating to have to start the car, disengage and engage the parking brake if you happen to have left something in your car...though, I do understand the safety aspect...

Re: Best Aftermarket Remote Start?

manual transmission work. the way it's set up in my other car is a switch that turns it on and off i i wanna use theremote start. very useful if somebody is borrowing the car, you can have the remote start off just in case they left thecar in gear and tried starting it
