Outside air vents ?

Okay, So I started to work on the interior in the car and painting. Im trying to paint all the rings around the air vents. The inner one's around the CD player just come right out however, the ones on the outside are far to close to the dash to get a nylon trim tool behind without feeling like Im going to break something. Please help !

Re: Outside air vents ?

if your talking about the air vent thingy, youll have to rip them out then jb weld them back in there plastic welded on,
take the dash out and take them out that way

Re: Outside air vents ?

On the xB2 all the vents are held in with 3 screws from behind the panel, trying to take them off from the front will just break them. The driver's side is pretty easy, just snap the trim around the instrument cluster off and it comes with it. The passenger side is more of a pain as it is in part of the main dash. From looking at it you should be able to get enough access by removing the glove box and undoing the screw up above it and possible also removing the screw behind the center vents as well.

Here's Jason's(scvscions) post on another site in the DIY section.

Re: Outside air vents ?

Thanks for all the help guys. I read that DIY and the pictures kinda confuse me as far as where to take the pieces off. Your saying I can do it just by taking the Glove box off ?

Re: Outside air vents ?

You'll need to pull the glove box to access the one screw up above it but also remove the center trim around the radio and the little trim piece beneath it as well to get access to the two screws there. You probably won't need to remove the far screw on the driver's side of the dash as you just need enough access to take the screws holding the vent in. With the two cener screws and one above the glove box you should have enough access to get a small screwdriver in there and remove the vent screws so that you can take it off and paint.

Re: Outside air vents ?

just make sure to disconnect the batt. i have done all my vents and it looks good the steering wheel pieces are e-z to do but you have to mask off the buttons for the radio.

Re: Outside air vents ?

The vent on the pass side is a little tricky, I used a shorty phillips to remove them.

Smile Re: Outside air vents ?

For what it's worth, I'm doing the same thing. Somehow I missed this post. The pro said the best way was to remove the dash...like $100. I could not beleive I had to disconnect airbags and stuff to get at a $5 piece of plastic that was around the passanger's side vent.

I took out the radio (but didn't unplug it), pried up the clips holding the right-hand side of the dash and got a tiny but hefty phillips screwdriver in there and unscrewed all three. I did take the glove box out, but I might have missed something because it didn't get me any access at all.

Now I want to remove the silver-gray decorations off the steering wheel and have them painted and glossed to match the vents (hyper silver with a gloss coating). It looks like I can just unscrew the steering wheel cover to give me access to the two screws and six clips and tabs holding them in. Has anyone done this before?

Thanks, Ron from Massachusetts.
