So I made a soft armrest and made it to match the height of the stock attached to the seat. My next project is to fabricate a new armrest to attach to the seat. I used to drive a Tahoe and those lazy-boy type seats really got me spoiled. Let me know if anyone is interested in seeing my creation for the door panel and I'll try to post some pics.
Do you have any pix of what you made? Thanks!

Re: Armrest Going into Production...

I just finished up some arm rests. I used some 1/4" ply, closed cell foam and imitation black leather to create the door rests. I also did work on the arm rest for the driver. I gutted the factory rest. The rest has a plastic skeleton inside. I lengthened the rest to 16" and made it wider to 2 and 3/4 inches. I used 3/4" plywood turned on edge to enlarge the arm rest skeleton. It is wider at the front and tapers back so that the center compartment lid can lift. It just barely touches it. The sides and bottom are 1/4" closed cell foam and the top edge is 1/2" closed cell foam. The covering and foam covering was done by upholstery shop in my town. They charged me $75.00 for the work. It is way more comfortable than the factory rest.

I've got pictures to post but since I'm a newbie I have to wait until I've got 30 posts on this forum and with this one I'll have seven.

Re: Armrest Going into Production...

Attached are photos of the arm rests I made for my box. For the center armrest I took off the original fabric/molded foam and built a wider and longer rest using plywood. I then took it to an upholstery shop and they made a cover and put the foam on it. The rests for the doors were made from 1/4 plywood with imitation leather stretched over foam. I glued them in place with a hot glue gun.

Re: Armrest Going into Production...

Very nice job greenman! Really like the padded rest on the door panel. I just cant get confortable with my left arm. I was thinking of building up the center arm rest about 3-4 inches higher and extending it a few inches also. I will have to take it to an upholstery shop cause thats just too much work! Again, nice work greenman.....flop

Re: Armrest Going into Production...

Sorry everyone I find this thread amusing. I just traded of my RX-8 for my '09 xB and I'm so in awe of the space in here it's rediculous. I drove the first two hundred miles without ever noticing there was an armrest. Since then I have noticed that it is a tad small but still comfortable and better than nothing. Nice job on yours Greenman. How comfortable is it?

Re: Armrest Going into Production...

09noo xb,

The arm rests are very comfortable. They are as wide as the arm rests in a Honda Odsyeey.
