| Re: Oil change time!!!! synthetic is good oil but you have to be carful it has ways of finding the smallest spots and letting them leak. but it is rare. I have had this happen once before, but on a good note when i switched back it stoped. so give the syn, a chance its good stuff... |

| Re: Oil change time!!!! Dont' bother with semi-synthetic. You pay most of the cost of full synthetic and get virtually none of the benefit. Suggest watching specials (like Pep Boys or Checker) and buying full synthetic. Bought 5 Qts of at Checker for $0.99/qt after rebate. PepBoys is advertising 5Qts Pennzoil Synthetic and PureOne filter this week for $23. |

I guess if the oil is free. |

| Re: Oil change time!!!! yeah your supposed to be able to run my synthetic for 6000, but i get it for free and I use the lifts at work to do it... and I'm on the clock, and it certainly cant hurt to change your oil early... ideally when you change your oil you want it to look clear, like new oil... so the more frequently you change it the better. I guarantee you'll be alot better off in the long run if you change it before it needs it.... and i wouldn't recommend using 25k or 35k oil.... you should still change it every 3 months... wether you've hit the mileage or not...

| Re: Oil change time!!!! Interesting opinion Kev. I still think changing it out that frequently, especially on a camry engine, is overkill. I am willing to bet that with regular oil changes I will still get close to 200k out of my xB. Well my son will cause as soon as he is of age its his. |

| Re: Oil change time!!!! Yea, all that blow-by funk still goes in the oil. The sloppier the tolerances, the more contaminated the oil gets.

......you can change your oil every 25K-35K miles, if the engine was designed with that in mind. My 99 BW Beetle has 170K on the orig engine and clutch, and it's still running. I change the oil every 10K, just like the manual says. But the VW uses a timing belt, and not a chain, so changing the oil every 10-15k is fine. Some cars (GM cars like Saturn I think....not too sure) requires frequent oil changes to prevent the timing chain from getting all sludged up. But this is not true with all engines that use a timing chain. The xB2 manual says to change the oil every 5K....so I'll change it when it's at least 5K (probably a little longer).
As for the whole "ideally when you change your oil you want it to look clear" is not true either. You can't determine the concentration of contaminates in used oil, just by looking at it. Not all forms of contaminates will discolor motor oil, take water for example. It needs to be sent out to a lab, for analysis. I've also read that a good Syn Oil is fine up to 10k-15K in these Toyota engines (based on an oil analysis). So yeah, changing you oil at 2500K is a waste.
My xB2 break in period is just about over. So I'll be switching to syn real soon (0w20). I've only used Mobil 1 full syn oil over the years, and been very happy. Not cheap, but it's considered the best on the market. Used 10w30 in GT mustang...100K at the time I sold the car, not a single engine related issue. 0w40 in winter or 5w40 in summer in the VW Beetle w/ 170k and still running on orig turbo, engine and clutch (syn tranny fluid). |

Both are good , and both are expensive, but in the long run, are worth it! |

Pep boys did that to my VW a few years back. Stripped the drain plug on my aluminum oil pan....they denied responsibility and I had to get a new oil pan. since then, I do my own oil changes on that car. I used a Pela oil extractor to change the oil......no need to get under the car.
I don't think that works on Toyotas, only German cars.

| Re: Oil change time!!!! first off...i wasn't saying if its not dirty then its all good to go... but you definitely don't want it to look dirty, and as i stated previously i get my oil for free and can change it on the clock, so it doesn't hurt to change mine before its due. and i was talking about 2nd gen xBs when i said it should be changed every 3k, if your using synthetic you could go 6k. i do work with this stuff every day. toyota says to change it every 5k because they want you at the dealer every 5k maintenance and they want to make the money on the oil change too, i would recommend every 3k if your not using full synthetic... but thats just my professional opinion...
oh...fyi anyone who wants amsoil, hit me up, they sponsor my race team and i can get you whatever you need...
