| Re: Oil change time!!!! Does Saying things like "protects alot better", "waiting too long on regular oil." make sense? Better? maybe. How much better? and more importantly, do you need it??? How many people are going to put a LOT more than 200K on their cars? My old previa is an eyesore, and all kinds of stuff stopped working on it... but the motor still runs like new. what exactly is the point of running better oil? Should I start running expensive oil in IT now? |

| Re: Oil change time!!!! Yes protects your engine alot better than regular oil makes sense. Synthetic doesn't break down in heat and cold weather like normal oil. I plan on running this car into the ground so my car will last over 200k. Read up on synthetics and then tell me its not better than regular oil. |

| Re: Oil change time!!!! Sepp, So, I should start running synth in my 91 previa?
Will that fix all the broken door handles, non-functioning AC, rust on the body, glass held in with duct-tape?

| Re: Oil change time!!!! Buy expensive oil, if you've got more money than sense. I'm saying, it doesn't matter to the long term life of your vehicle, because the doors will fall off before the engine suffers internal problems due to poor lubrication. It's a Toyota for F's sake. I wish my previa's engine WOULD quit, so I could get rid of the stupid ugly thing. It's motor is fine, and I've never so much as let it catch a wiff of synthetics. It's got the same size motor as a tiny xBox!
What the hell is this? do you sell Amsoil or something? |

| Re: Oil change time!!!! Your just ignorant saying engine oil doesn't matter. Its like life line of your engine. A Toyota engine can fail just like a Chevys engine can fail from not being properly cooled. |

| Re: Oil change time!!!! Guys... Sorry to bump this thread but it's time for me to change my oil now... I'm at 4,587 miles mark and the Maint. Req Light is coming up already...
So, I need your final advice on this matter.
Since I don't want to start another issue with "X VS. Y" Oil let me brief you my scenario...
I was debating whether to use Amsoil or Royal Purple.... however, I to my "surprise" I couldn't find a local RP distributor/re-seller so I am going with Amsoil. The thing is, the local re-seller ONLY has 0W-20 and not 5W-20. So bearing in mind that here in Puerto Rico the temperature is NEVER (Yes... NEVER!) cold... is it OK to still use 0W-20? Here the temp never goes BELOW 90 degress... (Yes... NEVER BELOW 90 DEGREES!) Is there much of change a in 'viscosity' between the 0W-20 and the 5W-20 for lower/higher temperatures? Does it matter at all?
I just called the dealer and they told me there's no conflict with the Warranty if I bring my own oil (doesn't matter if it is sync or regular nor what brand you use... it doesn't void Warranty at all as long as you use the OEM Oil Filter) So basically on that part I have no choice...
Could you guys tell me if it is OK to use Amsoil 0W-20 in HIGH (Really High!) Temps?
Thanks!
CY1. |

| Re: Oil change time!!!! Cyberick1: I am using Mobile 1 0w20 in my car since I did the first oil change 16k ago. I have no problems with the 110 temps here. 0w give you better start up lubrication than 5w and they both have the same viscosity.
Mobile 1 and Amsoil both don't have the temp data for you to compare the 0w20 vs 5w20 last time I looked. |

| Re: Oil change time!!!! Thanks Guys... I had read that on Amsoil's web page but I guess I wanted some "emotional" support/feedback from THE REAL people on this issue... since we are all proud owners of Xb's!
I researched so much in the 'Net on what Oil to use and what not that I forgot the most important Scion Xb what-to-do-guide of the World. THE MANUAL! And guess what the manual says? Yup.... You can use 0W-20! And you are supposed to used it in High Temp places I guess since there is even a chart that describes "when and why" use 5W or 0W!
So I am definitely hitting the dealer on Saturday for an oil change and I am going to try things out with Amsoil. Thanks for your responses guys!
I appreciate it! |

I guess I would like the dealer to take care of changing the oil and filter and doing the whole maintenance thing while within the 33,000 miles of warranty. Just to be safe with the warranty thing... 'cause at least here (don't know in the states) but the dealer kinda likes keeping tabs and records... I don't want anything to happen "motor-wise" and then have the dealer accused or allege that I haven't been keeping up with the "every 5,000 miles" maintenance routine... You know what I mean...? - Once out of warranty then I'll handle it myself. |

| Re: Oil change time!!!! As long as you keep all your receipts and write down the mileage that you did the oil change at you won't have any problems.
I have a folder which I keep all the receipts when ever I do something to my car.
You only have a 33k mile warranty? |

| Re: Oil change time!!!! My Maint light come on... Time for an oil change.. I have been going to the dealer since I got my box but now I have lost faith in them... Here is some history.. The last time I went to the dealer I was coming up on my 30,000 marker. The service guy was trying to sell me the 30,000 service for heavy-duty truck/SUV's with the price tag of 300 something bucks... When I was going through the description of that service it was mostly visual inspections with a normal oil change. The biggest kicker was when I noticed the same service for half the price on smaller cars etc Camry, Corolla and so on... so I questioned him and his response was that my box is a wagon and must have the heavy-duty/SUV package... Well like every other mod’er out there. I didn’t have that kind of cash to do it so I passed on it and just did my oil change. Hell they didn’t even rotate the tires.. so I’m done with dealers… Ok Ok enough of my bitch’n.. Here is my question.. What is a good normal “full synthetic Oil” and what “weight”? I live in Las Vegas so I get both extremes of weather (Very Hot and colds), and I could put 5000 miles every 3 months. I daily drive an 08 xB manual transmission. My normal driving habits are a bit heavy (on the streets anywhere between 45 to 60 mph and freeway 65 to 75 mph) I don’t race I just drive fast and that’s where my Box feels most comfortable at. I use to put Castrol Full Synthetic 10w-30 on my 04 Chevy blazer, and I never had a problem.. However I read so many reviews on Mobil 1, Valvoline full syn., Eneos, Amsoil, or Royal Purple.. And they all sound good… anyone out their using any of these with the same driving habits as me?? Any suggestions will be much appreciated…. |

I'll see how it goes 2morrow at the dealer and depending on their service and stuff I'll see what route to take... However, if it is like you said that I should have a problem with the warranty I'll most likely then start doing things myself... Quote: |

| Yeap... The fact is I never asked the dealer about an Extended Warranty Service... Why, think it is worth investing on it? |

So... went yesterday to the dealer, got that Amsoil 0W-20 in, new OEM filter, tire rotation... for $45. Not bad... I was in and out in 20 minutes... Quote: |

| Yeah... here (in the Island... I don't know how puertorricans in the states are...) everything is about women and racing... Mostly everything is about the competitions between regular/turbocharged engines VS. rotorary engines. (Which is probably why you see a lot of RX7's and 8's down here...)
Don't know if it is against forum rules (If it is I hope you guys forgive me...) but here is a link of a local site that follows up all the drag/raceway/street racing here. Although they also have some pics of races in the states. (If you want to see the pics you got to click on the word "FOTOS" which is "PICTURES" in spanish... For Videos well.. self-explanatory... they are in the "VIDEOS" section...
pistonvsrotor.com <-(Gonna have to copy & paste 'cause I just got a message that to post links I got to have 30 post or more... sorry...)
The latest "trend" here is Four-Track racing (Mostly Yamaha-Banshee Racing... and Jeep Racing) so the first couple of links in the "FOTOS" sections are dedicated to them...) |
