I definitely need to know that one also. I don't like to rely on the local shop to change my oil, and will not go back to the dealer for it now that the 2 freebies are gone.

I think pg. 99 in the manual is on how to reset the dash light.

Whats a good synthetic then? I am getting an xB next weekend and have been hearing that synthetic is the way to on on a box.

Re: Oil change mileage???

When should someone use 0w-20 and not 5w-20?

lol. Another one who skipped the SAE post. I'm pretty sure the Scion manual created by Toyota and the SAE know a lot more than the average guy who thinks changing oil more often is better. Change it every 5000 miles and don't waste your money, time, etc.

Just read the post I made on what the SAE said.

Re: Oil change mileage???

Changing oil every 3000 miles hasn't made sense since the days of non-detergent motor oil. It's sad to see the 3,000 mile myth still being perpetuated today. IMO, changing oil more often than the manufacturer recommends is not only a waste of time, money and natural resources, it's environmentally irresponsible.

I change my Mobil One 5-20W and filter every 10,000 miles whether it needs it or not.

Re: Oil change mileage???

My 09 XB calls for 0W20 or 5W20. The only 0W20 I saw in PEPBOYS was synthetic. The Toyota shop did not have any 0W20 in stock (on order). Their manual calls for 0W20 for temp's over 40 degrees. So my question is: does 0W20 only come as synthetic? If not, who carries non-syn 0W20?

Is there a reason for 0W20 other than better mileage?

P.S. Great site. Looks to be as good as Escape-central where I got great help for my previous suv.

Re: Oil change mileage???

More info: Dealer now has 0W20. It is synthetic. Counter guy says the XB comes with 5W20, that is what they put in, and there is no reason to go to 0W20.

So, any opinions on the topic?

P.S. Would like to have started this as a new thread but I am new to the site and it does not let me.

Re: Oil change mileage???

I've been using 5w-20 for almost 2 years and 22k miles. I run Pennzoil dino oil and go to 5k miles before an oil change (waits for the Pennzoil sucks comments lol).

Re: Oil change mileage???

0w20 is a good choice if you live in Alaska or Siberia or care more about mpg than engine longevity. Otherwise, 5w20 is a better choice. I recently switched to 10w30 Pennzoil Platinum when I installed a turbo. I'll be running syn 5w30 in the winter. No more lightweight 20w for my turbo XB.

Re: Oil change mileage???

Your asking for trouble when you go beyond 5k with any kind of oil changes.

Re: Oil change mileage???

I have changed my Volvo 240 every 5000K with NOTHING special, and even mostly use the 'lousy fram' filters from the Midas I use. Engine is going strong at 225K and uses 1 quart every 5-6K - sometimes less. I cannot believe that 3000K changes would be any better - really. Not the way engines are made today, and with the better oil. Also, the spec on the XB is for natural oil. Is synthetic overkill??? All I no is that changing every 3K with Syn is plenty expensive. If you drive rallies every weekend - OK, but not me.
