Need More MPG - Do you think something is wrong???

Hello, I am new member here and have question about my new xB. First day took home with full tank of gas and the computer said I have 180 miles range. (I thought 14 gal tank with 22city 28hwy should be around 330 miles). I ignore it and just drive. My city average is 13.xx MPG and combined is 18.xMPG. This is lower than my V8 GX470. If this is it, it will completely defeat the purpose of getting xB for saving gas. I have filled up 3 times already and everytime i did that the most i got from computer is 220 miles range. Everytime fill up is about 13 gallons and most i got is 210-220 miles on actual drive.

I took it to Scion and they said engine not broken in yet which i have no clue what that means. I was also told because of 19" wheels i am getting no accurate read. I could have gone more than 220 miles but because of bigger wheel will cause wrong reading???? Such thing?

What do you all think? Appreciate any comment.

you cant trust the computer anyways, even if you have the stock wheels installed. the only way to truly know your average mpg is to divide how many miles you got on a tank of gas, by how many gallons it takes to fill up your tank at the station. that doesn't mean to just divide 280 miles by 14 gallons simply because the manual says the car can hold 14 gallons. you most likely did not use all 14 gallons, otherwise your car would be parked along the side of the road. divide the mileage by how many gallons it takes for you to fill up at the gas station.

not to mention, the bigger tires are going to reduce your gas mileage a little. not a lot, maybe 2 or 3 mpg.

Set your trip meter to zero the next time you fill up. When you fill up again take the number of gallons you used to fill the tank and divide them into the total miles on your trip meter.

example. 240 / by 8 gal = 30 mpg.

Re: Need More MPG - Do you think something is wrong???

A little update. I just done the test myself this afternoon my 2 xBs. I have an 08 xB RS5.0 Manual and 09 xB Blackberry Auto. (The Auto is the one has low mileage)

Test # 1 - Drove on freeway then reset the MPG meter when speed hit 65MPH and set on Cruise Control for approx. 13.x miles (never hit brake or anything on both cars.)

1) xB Manual - 35.9 MPG
2) xB Auto - 21.4 MPG

Test # 2 - Drove on local street on both cars - exact same route and similar traffic for about 8.x miles.

1) xB Manual - 21.4 MPG
2) xB Auto - 11.8 MPG

Both Cars have stock parts except bigger wheels for the Auto.

Please tell me if i have problem with the auto? If so, what is the potential problem and how should i approach dealer? I tried to talk to them but they said no problem. Both cars are new (a week apart)- Auto Trans now has 550 miles and Manual Trans has 90 miles. Please advise.

Not sure if it really matters or not, but when keeping track of my MPG's, I always fill up at the same station with the same pump. At least thats one variable I can eliminate.

Re: Need More MPG - Do you think something is wrong???

Your sample size (# of miles driven) is waaaayyyy too small to make a determination. You need to calibrate your odometer and speedometer for the 19" wheels/tires. Then, completely fill up your tank, reset the trip meter and drive the tank to empty. Then, fill it up, divide the miles on the tripmeter by the number of gallons that you have just replaced. Write this number down (it is the average for this tank). Track the averages of ten tanks and then take their average. That should yield you a semi accurate estimate of your MPG. Even 10 tanks is a small sample size unless you ALWAYS drive the same route, in the same driving conditions (temperature, elevation, humidity, stop and go, time of day, etc).

Re: Need More MPG - Do you think something is wrong???

Lke Toaster mentions, your sample is way too small. you need to sample for arround 50-100 miles minimum to even out any variances. Second, bigger rims only matters if you change the outside diamater of the rolling wheel. If you change the outside diameter of the wheel then your gas mileage will read lower than your actual, or put another way you could be getting as much as 30mpg where it's saying 22. If you make an adjustment to outside you really should have the adjustment made to the computer...

Re: Need More MPG - Do you think something is wrong???

I believe outside radius is the same but just the wheel size. How do i calibrate the odometer and sppedometer for 19" wheel just incase outside radius is larger.

I am already start tracking it. Last filled up was 11.6 gallon and 208 miles. Waiting for the next one to come. My GX470 filled up 16.x gallon and gets 300-320 miles.

My other xB Manual gets only has 130 miles now and still have more than half tank.

I will keep it updated and share the information.

What wheels do you have? How much do they weigh?

Fill up. Reset trip odometer. Drive until like half tank. Fill up and note gallons used to fill up tank again.
Divide miles drive by gallons used and that will give you the miles per gallon.

I know this was stated above, but from reading teh post it did not register if you understood that or not.

Heck for kicks, you can swap wheels and tires and see what happens.

Also, an engine should be driven easy for the first 1000 miles to properly break in the internal components. Then do an oil change and swap in synthetic, Mobil 1 is cheap and works just fine.

Oh yeah, i absolutely got it. That is why i am trying to track it by using the method mentioned. I will switch my original wheel from my manual xb when i am back from Hawaii.

Not sure if this is useful for you Sautan, but for benchmark (for lack of a better word) the (rough) stats on my car are:

'09 xB, Avg MPG: ~25.5 (more than half my 2900 miles are highway), ~300 miles range, all stock internals and externals. I think this is average, with some fluctuation to be expected..

Got an 09 xB that I just drove from Charlotte NC to Orlando, put over 1200miles on it. i avg'd 26-27 mpg's the entire trip. Total stock except lowered. Check on your wheel weight. that can make a huge diff. the steelies are pretty lite.

I have about 12k on my 08 xB that is mainly stock. For highway driving...which is most of what I do...I get between 27.5 and 29.4 mpg using hand calculations.

I have found not driving 75-80 mph has made a significant difference in my fuel economy.

I have to keep it at 65mph and cruise on flat stretches, but I get the same mileage numbers. It is probably due to the extra weight of my wheels and and the 30 pounds of Dynamat Extreme, Oh and the family ; ) just hit 12k myself.

I have an 09, I've just passed the 1700 mile mark (three weeks of Ownership), and hand calculations put me at the 27-29 MPG mark also. However I have a very heavy foot and my speed on the highway (90% of my driving) averages 80 and has hit as high as 120 for spurts.

No Cops read these posts do they??

Wouldn't matter, right? You're not on the road driving and typing at the same time ;-)

Same here though, I like to hit cruise control in the 80's (mpg) and just go..
...but from what I've been reading, seems 80+ (hell, maybe ever 70+) mph with put a huge dent in my MPG... I haven't the time nor energy to test/document this for myself. So I'll be relying on the skills and diligent on my fellow xB owners!

If you got the vehicle new with the factory 19"s then without question the dealership should have re-programmed the CPU for the larger outside diameter of the wheels. Go back to the dealership and get the re-programming, and if they woun't/can't do it find a better dealership. What (if any) engine mods have you done? a CAI will increase power, but lower MPG...

Read road and track while getting windshield chip repaired on my explorer and their fleet xB2 is getting an average of 24 mpg...... makes the Ford Flex mpg not look that bad to get seating for 7 and 260 stock hp.
