free h.p. air box mod

If anyone is interested in free h.p. and increased gas mileage listen up. Inside the air box is a thin filter after the regular air filter that is an air flow restrictor for emissions from what I understand. It has to be snapped out with a screw driver because it is heat welded in place. I performed this procedure on my wife's 2004 4runner and gained 2 mpg's. On the xb I noticed an immediate increase in low end torque. Not sure on fuel mileage yet.

Re: free h.p. air box mod

Good free mod. Removing the long silencer hose from the airbox intake or re-routing it to a location where it draws colder air (I.e. behind the grill) can also add a little performance. Removing it also adds some much needed engine sound.

Any pics? Is there the possibility that something could snap off and go into the engine?

Re: free h.p. air box mod

You still have your normal air filter and the screen in fromt of the mass airflow sensor. It took my car two days too relearn after removing silencer tube. It definately made a difference in response and power.

Re: free h.p. air box mod

The ecm needs to compensate for the increased airflow by adding more fuel or a lean engine mixture could result. I am not sure why it took two days to recalibrate. I spoke with techs at toyota and they did not think this was abnormal.

Re: free h.p. air box mod

I am not sure what effect this will have on emissions but all mods could be put back to factory specs. for once a year emissions testing.

Re: free h.p. air box mod

FWIW -- I removed the permanent airbox filter, replaced the intake air snorkle with a 3" flexible aluminum duct that terminated between the bumper and the dummy brake air inlet, and added the TRD high-flow air intake. I don't have any numbers, but I'm satisfied with the result. A very cost effective CAI solution !

fyi, if you want your car to "re-learn" just unhook the battery for a minute or two... and it'll reset everything...

Re: free h.p. air box mod

The "silencer" hose that goes into the airbox, that seems to be stuck on with glue.
What did you guys do to take it off?
If it needs to be put back on, do you use a hose clamp? I was poking around tonight and thought I would ask the question..
Thanks.

Re: free h.p. air box mod

The warranty would be my main concern. I dont like the idea of having to "cut" out or "break" something on a new car. I would like the increase MPG. Like to hear some real world numbers from people who have removed this.
