Re: Best Cat Back Exhaust?

Good question. I hope someone answers soon. I also hope they consider we are from California and it needs to be 50 state legal.

Re: Best Cat Back Exhaust?

I am also interested in California CARB legal cat back. Only ones I know for sure are the Borla and TRD.

I have had very good luck with Strup. They are not to loud to where you get hassled.

Re: Best Cat Back Exhaust?

Will just changing the muffler do anything other than change the sound?
Seems like to get the full benefit of a free flowing muffler you would have to change everything from Headers back including a free flow catalytic converter, biger tubes and muffler, then take a look at a different intake.
Just asking because that is what I did with my other car.

You might see a few hp but most likely you won't feel it. You'll think your faster because it sounds louder....

But what's the effective definition of "full benefit", full attention of local law enforcement? Pehaps an inability to pass local DMV requirements?

From what I've read, adding a competently designed catback can add 1 to 2 HP, but yes, it would appear the preceding "scuba" severely limits the gain . I understand adding a header can tack on a few more horsepower, though the "scuba" ultimately remains the anchor. We may want "performance", but the practical limitation continues to be what the state DMV and law enforcement will allow.

For the uninitiated . . .
Define Scuba.
Many don't know or use that term.

(Though, many also don't know the term "mill," at one time THE main tuner/hot rodder/runner term for a motor/engine.)

Re: Best Cat Back Exhaust?

I didn't either! I just came to understand from other's usage the shape and size of the second cat come resonator was sufficiently reminiscent of an underwater scuba tank that it became the parlance. I'm perfectly happy saying second cat myself, but the term "scuba" seems to have pretty much taken over.

Re: Best Cat Back Exhaust?

The effective definition of full benefit, IMHO would be more power and better gas milage. Fortunately I have never lived in a state with DMV requirements that included exhaust systems other than exhaust leaks (Vermont). As far as "attention of local law enforcement" you can have a free flowing exhaust and intake without having excessive noise. I did this with my other car, I know.
