1200F paint on Stainless Steel exhaust OK?

I expect to be installing a Tsudo dual exhaust in a few weeks and am seriously considering spray painting the Stainless Steel pipes between the axle and the rear resonators high temp (1200F) flat or satin black! Is anyone aware of any problems with doing this?

If not, does anybody have any recommendations on a good paint to use?

Thanks -- Trevor

i did that before too.... i used satin black and it worked great but turned grey after about 2 days on the header. so i used heat wrap on my header and it made a huge difference in engine bay temp. but as far as your exhaust being painted black all the way im not sure but mine stayed pretty dark compaired to the header, post pics when your done

I think it will work fine. That part of the exhaust wont get too hot. you should be ok.

you can also use BBQ grill paint also, I used it one my old '69 Chevy long-bed step-side and it worked great and at the time it was cheaper than engine paint

2 of my club members have this exhaust.

One of them is considering doing the same thing with the paint.
I think you could probably use the BBQ paint too.
You can get it at your local hardware store (where the spray paint is).

I’m not in this section very often, so someone may have already posted this, but a word of warning on this exhaust.
It does bolt on pretty easily, but there is a safety issue that the install instructions leave out.

Here’s a shot of the exhaust from underneath:

The red arrows are pointing to a plastic filter that will be practically sitting on top of the tail pipe.
If it melts, and it probably will, bad things will happen.
Very very bad things.

The guy doing the install ended up creating a bracket to replace the OEM one on the driver’s side of the filter to hold it higher.

Before:

After:

The bracket:

Then he wrapped the filter w flame resistant cloth and securing it w aircraft cable:

Oh yeah, here’s the final install :

I used the header paint on my weapon R header. I have it painted for almost 5 months now and not a single issue of flaw in the paint.

just don't do it to the stock manifold, it wont hold. Even black heat wrap turns white. But on the rear you'll be fine. Anything after the first 12" of the end of the manifold is good.

And so exactly why do you say "and it probably will"? Exactly what evidence do you have that this is a genuine problem that needs addressing?

You are hoping from forum to forum posting this criticizm and declaring it to be a "safety" issue, but I've yet toi hear of a single actual problem being reported! I only have 2K on my pipes, but as the photos I posted on ScionLife attest, there is not the slightest hint of damage to the filter box due to heat from the exhaust pipe.

Further, your statement that "a plastic filter that will be practically sitting on top of the tail pipe" is a definite exageration! The clearance between that pipe and the box on my xB2 is greater than the clearance between the outlets and my rear fascia. I definitely wouldn't describe the fascia as practically sitting on the exhausts outlets!

Need proof to support your criticism -- not just multiple instances of your opinion.

================================================== ========

Back on topic, thanks for all the inputs folks, though this thread gies back aways at this point ! In response to the woman's above post criticizing the Tsudo pipes, I took a couple photos and I'll post one here together with others showing how the paint and install worked out .

This shot shows the corner of the filter box above the pipe after 1.8K.

Here are two shots of the pipes before I finished adjusting their height from the fascia.

And here is a shot shortly after the installation was finished (1/2" spacing below the fascia).

PS. I just realized the other posting of her Tusdo exhaust criticism was actually here, not ScionLife (or perhaps I just haven't spotted it there yet):

Sorry for the slip!

It looks great! I'm thinking about a dual exhuast set up or just a twin exhaust... Just don't know which one yet. My friend has a shop that does custom exhausts and mufflers so either option can be done. Hmm decisions, decisions...
