could be total b.s. but i'm gonna do it 500 miles to go! |

| Re: 08' xB break-in period??? holding your speed steady during the break in period is what you want to avoid. Doesn't really matter your speed outside of maxing it out... |

| Re: 08' xB break-in period??? Ok, I have a one week old 09, I could not find the "break in" period in the manual. I was told by the dealership that it was 500 miles, and that I should not really push the engine above 65 or so, and no hard accelerations etc.
I just passed 650miles in a week of commuting, Am I out of the break in or What?
If not I'm screwed as I had the thing up to 110 for a few seconds this morning on the way into the office. As you can probably guess I have a heavy foot and drive a little fast... |

i just bought mine a week ago and the dealership never mention anythign about break in | "Break In Period" is a set amount of miles in which you drive the car and a manner that is not damaging to an engine. No Speeding, No burnouts, No beating on it during the period of miles till the engine "breaks in". |

i just bought mine a week ago and the dealership never mention anythign about break in | Breaking an engine "in" is a carryover from days gone by... today's engines are built with tolerance allowances that reduce or practically eliminate the need for a "break-in" period of time. Engines today are also run for a period of time before they reach the dealer as well.
However, just to be on the safe side, don't hold your speed steady (avoid the cruise control) for the first 500 miles, and slightly adjust your speed when cruising...i.e., speed up a few miles / hr, then back down a bit... doesn't take much. Used to be a steady speed would "groove" pistons and rings and alter performance at higher or lower speeds.
Honestly, it's not that big a deal anymore with the more modern technology. |

| Re: 08' xB break-in period??? Don't go WOT or over 3grand, don't drive on the freeway doing a steady 70mph. Just basicly don't beat on it for the first 1000 miles. |

could be total b.s. but i'm gonna do it 500 miles to go! | The dealer told me 5K to the first and future oil changes amd take it easy for the first 5K miles. I read the manual (apparently a VERY unpopular move!) and I tried to keep varying rpm for the first 1K miles and switched to Mobil 1 at 1K. Current plan is to drive it normally and stick to Mobil 1 ! |

| Re: 08' xB break-in period??? When I bought my new xb, The saleperson told me that if i put the bigger muffler and the cold air intake on it, I would see my mpg go to 33-35 mpg after putting 3000 miles on the car. Well, i Ihave 4400 miles on it and I am only getting 28-29 mpg. I asked my salesperson about this when I was in getting my oil changed - he said he didn't know why this would be and would get back to me - one month later I received a post card from him saying 29 mpg is what I can expect. Has anyone else been advised to buy these add ons and then not gotten what you were told to expect? Please help - I need to conront him and would like any advice. Thanks |
