Overhead console...install it myself?

Ok so I didn't get the overhead console at time of purchase but now I want it. Dealer says $199 for the part and $89 for the install. Just a bit more than the price on the Scion web site...I don't have too much issue with that really...but I can get the Console for $169 plus shipping from trdsparks.com Should I save that cash and do it myself?

I have read the directions and it looks like a medium dificulty job...if I let the dealer do it at least I have someone to ***** at if it isn't right. LOL

What would you do?

89 for install? Really? My dealer quoted me $16 bucks for install. Thats weird, i thought labor prices and install times were the same all around toyota/scion service centers.

I was wondering about this too though. With the directions, does it say there is any cutting or anything of the headliner?

Hmm too bad gas would offset the savings or I would come to your dealer....ok not really.

Yes there is cutting of the headliner. http://trdsparks.com/install/08253-12800inst.pdf

Re: Overhead console...install it myself?

Why don't you see if you can bring your own part to the dealer for the install?

Re: Overhead console...install it myself?

Yea that's an option too I suppose. But if we are in the money saving mood...LOL

I am a handy guy and most times if I can do a thing myself I will...I am sure I could handle the install...just a matter of wanting perfection.

Re: Overhead console...install it myself?

Well I do know when they installed mine they did pop a hole somehow in my passenger visor. They got a new one and put it in on their dime..
So if you do a "OOPS!!!" then your stuck huh??

I do like the idea of buying it and save then have them install.. You might save a few bucks & some grief..

Oh and yes, the dealers all charge diffrent prices on installs . That is their extra profit.. I was only charged for strut & tie bar install at $22.50 each. All other options was the price as quoted on the site with no additional charge.

That is the only place where you can get your price break is in the options & their install fees. That instal fee is 100% profit.

I'm thinking about getting the overhead console, but I have only seen pictures - does it match the rest of the interior? Does it seem solid, not flimsy?

Re: Overhead console...install it myself?

I have installed a couple of the Gen 1 options and find that they make it very easy to do. The instructions you linked to seem to follow the typical Toyota formula. I would think if you have the patience it looks to be a pretty straight forward install. I would just do it myself.

Re: Overhead console...install it myself?

Just installed mine with the help of my brother Saturday afternoon and I was a piece of cake...It took less than an hour to install, just be careful with the cutting part and you'll do just fine. We also installed the electrochromatic mirror, lighted door sills, cargo net, and the 2 rear quarter panel nets. We worked on it for about 5 hours, but trust me the easiest part was the overhead console

yes it matches, but the picture on Scion site is off, it actually has two compartments, one in the front before the map light and one in the rear. it goes from the windshield to about 2 inches from the dome light.

Re: Overhead console...install it myself?

It is an auto dimming mirror, for nighttime driving, with buttons that you can program to operate your garage door opener.

Eh I decided to not get the Pioneer D3 or Z2 so I have a little bit of cash to blow. Plus they are really nice and it solves my homelink issue. Still have my eye on one from a Prius which should be much cheaper...same part just not new.

Talking Re: Overhead console...install it myself?

very easy install! The part comes with all the hardware, instructions and template needed to get it done. Just make sure to not over cut too much and follow the instructions as stated. The holes that you cut expose two brackets needed and a space for the compartments to fit inside the ceiling.
You will install a bracket in the front with two screws and anchors and the rest of the unit is held by two screws on that bracket and two more from an exposed bracket that is cut out near the center dome light.

I was trying to get it done quickly so i forgot to take photos during the install but here are several after install.
