Spark Plugs

Ok hitting the 30,000 mark and time o change the plugs...... what should I use???? Everything right now is stock.... and the only thins that will change will be a short ram and exhaust so I don't think that that will have bearing on the plugs but I could be wrong... soooo any input would be grreatful!!!

Re: Spark Plugs

Yep, Toyota products like Denso (ND) and NGK plugs. Not really anything else. While working in our parts department I saw several dozen Toyota cars that ran like crap/got terrible mileage/flipped on CELs/whatever simply because they were running a different brand of plug.

I went with the Denso platinum myself. Factory recommended! My wife's will get the same if she ever gets to 30K...

Good luck!

Re: Spark Plugs

we just installed some NGK Iridium IX plugs gaped at 0.44. We started it up & only smooth the idle became. We went on a test run & it was a nice difference in power & shifts are smoother.

Re: Spark Plugs

no reason to be sorry about asking
you have a 4 cylinder there for you will need 4 plugs
and the NGK's are awsome but i also recommends the Bosch Platinum 4 plugs

I found this one:

but it's gapped at 0.32, where do you get the 0.44 and again, noob question, does that make much of a difference?

Thanks again!

Edit: After some research, i guess the 32 can be changed to 44 but now my question is, why 0.44? Is this the tested and popular choice for the xBs?

With gas at $3.79/gallon, many are willing to try anything. Buying these more expensive plugs equates to the cost of about 10 gallons of gas (325 miles). If they add 1-2 mpg, it would take many fill ups (24) before any return on your investment is realized. (In my case it would take about 8 months.) Are they really that good?

Great thread and good read. I did read around there that NGK and Scion specify the following:
Quote:
According to the Xb Service manual here are the correct specs for the plug gaps:
Denso (K16RU)= 0.7 mm / 0.028 inches
NKG (BKR5EYA)= 0.8 mm / 0.031 inches
So what is it?

Also, do you guys recommend any particular torque wrenches out there? Hopefully under $50?
They linked this but wanted to get a 2nd opinion from my box brothers

I came up with ten gallons because I subtracted out the requisit cost of buying 4 cheap plugs at about $3.50 a piece. When I posted, I figured someone would see the the math didn't add! Thanks!

Re: Spark Plugs

Just a noon question, why are you gapping the plug at .044 when toyota recommends a gap of no more than .032--wouldnt that create less efficiency?

Re: Spark Plugs

Good thread here, just wanted to chime in. I have a few bolt ons, headers, intake, etc. Should i still run the stock plugs or colder ones?

Re: Spark Plugs

All I know is that I'm running a short ram intake and magnaflow exhaust with the stock plugs. I would remove your current plugs and give them a good look! How are they performing? nice amber color or sooty deposits?
Are they running to hot? Electrode burning away? It would be my guess that since we really can't make that much extra power with these engines that the stock replacements would be fine. (NGK/Denso any metal)
