Rattle can paint job?

Hey all

i want to paint the top half of my car black and am wondering if i can just get some spray paint and do it. i'm good with spray paint and i know that if i did it that way it would be soooooo much cheaper then getting it professionally done. what do you think? anyone have any other ideas?

i personally don't think rattle caning your exterior is a great idea.....its cheap for a reason....its not as durable as conventional auto paint.

yeah I wouldn't suggest u do it wit a rattle can, y not just go pick up or barrow a compressor and buy a paint gun and do it that way

Re: Rattle can paint job?

if u insist on doing it urself, at least get a spray gun and try to make it look nice. u could just use a rattle can, but quality will suck, color will not stay, and just look bad overall

Re: Rattle can paint job?

ummm im a huge paint nut. a gun is easier to control because of the fan spray pattern. rattle cans spray in a cone. try to get spray cans with the new fan spray nozzle. i sprayed stripes with stars on an old car using rattle cans and minway poly in a spray can. still looks amazing. theres a lot more to it then just spraying a color to get a good finish. what were you looking to do?

My brother generally uses PPG Paints or House Of Kolor. Any automotive paint supply store will have it and can mix any color for you. Remember, it's all about the Prep work too.

Re: Rattle can paint job?

I shot my 69 bug with rustolium out of a gun (not the spray can) from home depot, its a gloss paint so it looks like it has also been clear coated and is like $10 a can.

Re: Rattle can paint job?

I woudldnt rattle can it if you want it to look nice.

Id suggest you do the prep to cut down on the end cost and then just take it to a reputable shop. Im sure they can do just the top half for less than $500

Really? less then $500? i can actually do that. so for prep what all do i need to do? just sand and primer? cause that is all i would do if i did it myself. i'm quite impatient and s i wanna do this as soon as possible. but i'm also not rollin so i gotta work hard for my dough.

Re: Rattle can paint job?

They now make cans that spray like a gun with automotive quality paint so it is possible. Again it is all in the prep work.

The spray gun is better but you can also get rechargeable spray cans.

Remember no matter how you shoot the paint if you do not prep the surfaces and tape off properly it will still look junky.....

Re: Rattle can paint job?

Don't paint it your self, if you do. Wet sand it with 600grt wet sanding paper or red scotchbrite. No need to prime unless you are fixing dents and using filler

Re: Rattle can paint job?

interesting. thanks!

so okay you wet sand the car 600grit until it's roughed up... then you paint, clearcoat, and that's it??? is there any additional protection needed besides clearcoat? i'm with you - i want to paint my car myself. If i get the right equipment I don't see how it could be so hard. idk...

Re: Rattle can paint job?

I agree that if you can get that sprayer from your buddy, that is the way to go. I have heard good stuff about this line, Paint Shop

also TOTALLY agree that prep is where it is at. if you don't do the right prep it does not matter what you spray it with, it will turn out like crap.
also agree that if you are not doing body work, and just paint, no need to take it down to bare metal and prime.

Re: Rattle can paint job?

Hell if you do the prep your self, and take it to a shop, it'll cut down on a lot of cost.

Or if you do the prep your self, and do it right, just flat black that *****. You'll have to re-do it after a while, as it'll fade, but eh. I bet just flat black primer can be done for under $100.

I did my cavy like that. lol. But all of my budget was spent on Toyota Cavalier Tails, Toyota Cavalier Fenders (wider), HPD Scorps, air ride, and fixing everything I drug off, like the front lip, front bumper, cat back, ect. lol
