| Re: The Fountain Yeah, that non-linear plot was hard to follow, but try watching it again. Once you get it the basic storyline, the movie's themes will make more sense. On my first viewing, I wasn't sure what was going on, but I was totally feeling the director's passion for the movie.
The film really is a work of art that can be open to interpretation no matter what your religious background is. I was discussing the movie with my gf, and we think it's about how fear of death is the cause of most of humanities problems and anxieties. The movie asks, what if we could live forever? If we really could live forever (tree of life), what would make us different from god? Knowing we will eventually die (from tree of knowledge) is what defines us as humans.
It's too bad this movie didn't get more exposure - I think it just went over too many heads. It's also too bad the DVD doesn't have a Director's Commentary, but I heard they are trying do that for a Criterion Collection release. |
