| History of my home video games... Dan posted up a cool website where you can play old NES games and some of the posters said they felt old seeing those old games. Here's a few pics of my home video game history to make them feel better.
Back in 1975 when I still had my learners permit we got our first home video game. It had no paddles or joysticks. Just a slider and three knobs. The Magnavox Odyssey 100 played Pong and a few other games all based on the Pong game. It was boring but we didn't know it since we had nothing else to compare it to!
Next we stepped it up a bit with the Fairchild Channel F home game console. It had joysticks although you could only twist the knob left, right, forward, back and push down. The games were so high tech compared to Pong, we thought it couldn't get any better than this!
Things did get better though as technology marched on. I was out on my own and bought my first video game for my new pad. The Atari 2600! These games were awesome. I spent so many hours at night playing all the cool games.
Atari forced me to upgrade to the new Atari 6200. Better games and a more complicated joystick setup.
Next came the time in my life when I had to save the Princess. I spent every waking hour when I wasn't working playing Super Mario Brothers and it took me six months to win the game! I never played it again since.
When I had my children they had to have what all the other kids had so I bought them a Sega Genesis system and we all had fun on that...so Hi Tech!
They outgrew the Sega and it was time to move on to the Sony line. Our first Playstation was the turning point for me and video games. My kids could play any game I brought home without reading the directions. I was shot dead in a gun game or left behind on any other kind of video game so I hung it up and just enjoyed watching my kids play.
I did buy a Sony Playstation 2 for my son a few years ago for Christmas. I couldn't get it in a store so I had to pay through the nose on eBay. He still has it I belive.
The Nintendo NES and the Sega Genesis are in my garage. I think I have the Sony Playstation somewhere too. I'll have to look around and maybe plug it in! |

| Re: History of my home video games... Nice, I do remember having a console that only played pong and I remember it having two controllers with just round knobs on them that you turned to control the pong paddle. Brings me back, and to think I just recently spent over $600 on my xbox 360, crazy. |

There's an actual website that has the history of consoles, and video games. Just google it guys, it's AWESOME.
Also, there's one for the history of the Personal Computer as well.
BTW, I have all the games emulated on my computer (minus ps2 and xbox games) so uh, if you wanna go, I'll take ANY of you on. Just as long as it's not those boring navy seals and shooter games, for that, I have my PC. hehehehe. |

| Re: History of my home video games... I remember sometime around '76 the local mall was hosting a Pong contest. Contestents pre registered and then went head-to-head playing each other in pong. Each loser was eliminated and the winner went on to the next round. It took all day to weed the pack down to one winner, and he won...
A pong console of his very own! LOL |

| Re: History of my home video games... Ah, good thread...even if it did take me 4 months to catch it...
Anyway, my uncle had a pong console and I remember playing that fairly often. Interesting to remember that as being an "adult toy" where so many consoles are aimed at kids now.
I eventually got the 2600 (I still vividly remember the day I finished Pole Position without a single crash or wheel off the track. Perfect run!). Other kids in the neighborhood had Coleco, Intellivision, and eventually a 5200 (PacMan looked AWESOME on that, just like the arcade!). Does anybody remember the graphics triumph that was DK Jr. on Colecovision? Holy cow that was amazing!
I went through easily a dozen joysticks on that 2600 over the years. I played the hell out of it. I even own a copy of E.T. and played it more than once. After that I saw the Sega Master System and proceeded to have two break on me before I bought the NES that I still have (working perfectly BTW) today.
The NES and I became the best of friends and my human friends and I languished countless hours on all the classics: Mario, Tyson, Track and Field, Duck Hunt, Hogan's Alley, Final Fantasy, Dragon Warrior, Zelda, Contra, Karnov, Castlevania, Mega Man, Goonies, etc.
From there it follows like this:
SNES (took it to Germany and got so good at Mario Kart I could do the entire first race in under a minute)
Play Station (only purchased for the masterpiece that is Grand Turismo)
N64 (3-D Mario made me a bit sick at first...Goldeneye made up for it)
Dreamcast (Shenmue was a triumph and I loved the fishing controller)
xBox (Timesplitters, lots of Timesplitters)
GameCube (Wavebirds play THROUGH WALLS!)
PS2 (again, purchased for a specific game, GTA3...totally worth it)
xBox 360 (DANG, this console rocks in so many ways!)
Wii (still not 100% convinced I love it, but the wife does)
I spend a lot of money on video games...oh well, I love 'em and I'd do it all over again.

| Re: History of my home video games... Nice Alex. I forgot about this thread.
I have an arcade version of Asteroids that I moved to my buddies house when Kelly moved in. I need to replace the screen but I've spent a lot of time playing that game. It needs new graphics on one side but it still plays great and I don't have to put any quarters in (although I don't tell my company that) |

Mine goes:
NES Side load
NES Top Load
Nintendo Virtual Boy
N64
Gameboy Pocket
Playstation 1
Gambcube
Oddly enough, all I do is play my topload NES now. I can play the 3 Super Mario Bros in a row in less than 50 mins total. Im also kinda a master at Bubble Bobble. Im pretty damn good at Super Smash Bros for Gamecube, but Im not into it as much as the others. |
