Anyone Use Norton?

Do you have this anti virus program stuff from Norton? We had a nice young man
stop over and fix our computer again. It seems that Norton has way too many
issues with it's programming. Hell -- I haven't seen that many error codes in my
life. At least we're up and running again.

Ok the post whoring begins ..............

Might I suggest AVG Free, and Kaspersky.

Also, pick up Adware SE personal, spybot SnD, amd AVG's amtispyware (free 30 days).

Re: Anyone Use Norton?

Well it seems that we're not the only one's that have this problem lately. The
young man that got us up and running again said he had a very similar problem
with another customers computer.Start it and it goes into a boot mode, finishes
booting and then leaves you with a blank blue screen. Nothing on it just blue.
He uninstalled norton got his computer set to go and then reinstalled norton
per the customers request. Less than two weeks later he was back at this
mans house to fix his computer again. Same problem - errors within norton.
On the front side everything shows fine with norton, but on the backend all
sorts of errors codes. Uninstalled norton and his computers working just fine.
We are the 4th or 5th person within the last 30 days or so with the same
issue that this young man has helped. We had ad-aware.spybot and spysweeper
before and now have avg 7.5 thanks to the young man.

Re: Anyone Use Norton?

Ray, the virus protection programs like Norton and Macafee are bloated and huge. They use up way too much of your resources and cause more trouble than they are worth. I use AVG Free on my PC's. My MAC don't need nothin'.

Try these links: http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1

If you want to pay for a virus protection program I suggest NOD 32.
It's lightweight and works great. Check it out here: http://www.eset.com/

Re: Anyone Use Norton?

My dad used to swear by McAfee until he realized all the problems it was causing his computer. Jeff has never trusted them, and had a pretty bad experience with them before. Well, it's been a few years, and we thought we'd give McAfee one more chance, because we get it free through our cable internet. But it was really causing problems again. So he switched us over to BitDefender, and it's amazing how slow we were running before, I've noticed a huge difference ... I don't think I will ever trust McAfee again!

Re: Anyone Use Norton?

I don't use M$ OS's too much although I still have Win98SE on one partition and Win2K on another. I dumped WinXP; way too much bloat. Anyway both have AVG Free installed. I don't need anything in Linux or QNX.

Re: Anyone Use Norton?

yeah you really gotta be careful which versions of stuff you get....you just want simple virus scan software...not anything complicated...they take up too much resources...i just get the virus definitions online and scan once per month...i removed all other attached software....

try trendmicro.com they have a program called housecall...they scan for viruses and clean up for you...no software on your computer.

and a good firewall will keep spyware and other malware from screwin things up...

thinking hard about getting a mac for my next computer!!

Re: Anyone Use Norton?

Also, keep in mind that since Norton and McAfee are the 'big dogs', software engineers (it's really what they are, they just rip apart the code and find loopholes) exploit the programs, and the mainstream stuff becomes problematic. It's just like how it is right now with microsoft, apple, and linux. there are a million more problems with windows because it's the OS of a majority of users. therefore, the best way to infect 'the man' is by screwing with windows.

Re: Anyone Use Norton?

I've been using Symantec Antivirus Corp on all of my servers for the past 3 years. I've had no problem what so ever. I've even created a simple CD for Windows XP with it pre-installed so that if a server crashes, instead of using Norton Ghost (which will cause more issues later on) I can just reinstall it; The whole damn thing.

Works like a champ.

^^ditto. I dropped my Norton after it expired and picked up AVG (free) and am lovin' it. Norton has way too many warnings and pop-ups for me.

I also recommend AVG. I hate Norton! Or I'd go with PC-Cillin.

Re: Anyone Use Norton?

Norton is a resource hog. If you're going to use a commercial anti-virus, use McAfee. Free anti-viruses are popping up everywhere, and programs like AVG and Avast Home have proven to be tough contenders against commercial anti-viruses. If you need an anti-virus for a home desktop, I HIGHLY suggest AVG. Otherwise, for office or server use I suggest Norton or McAfee only because of their heuristics against new viruses.
