Post Re: Anyone Use Norton?

In addition to Kaspersky, I highly encourage the use of

Crud Cleaner (freebie, but be sure to transfer those cookies you want to keep!)
http://www.ccleaner.com/

and B-C Wipe.. not free but a really good proggie for keeping everything uncluttered on those file slacks, swap files and free spaces.

also for encryption of your "personal files" go with Kremlin.

(I have used these programs for many years..)

Re: Anyone Use Norton?

Well if we're talking about maintenance now, all of the programs saddlesore listed are great. I've been suggesting ccleaner to everyone since I started fixing computers on the side. Don't forget programs like Ad-Aware, PerfectDisk, and ZoneAlarm. PerfectDisk isn't free but it's the best defragmenting program I've come across so far.

Re: Anyone Use Norton?

Oops! I did fergit ZoneAlarm-Pro didn't I?

Is that defrag proggie any faster than the crud that bill Gates supplys?

NEWZ!

finally got the wife's new 'puker..and am gonna try to get it up and running tomorrow (I hope)
time to read the instructions on this wireless networking and router stuff..ie' keyboard, mouse and printer.
It's sure gonna be a huge jump from the '98se that she had.(from 20 gig hd @ 500 hrtz & 354 meg ram.on dial-up isp to 1tb hd @ 2 gig & 2 gig of ram on Comcast boosted....

not real sure if I did the right thing by going with Vista home-office,(with Dell I did have a choice of XP or Vista) but I figured that support for XP will fade away in a few short years like Millenium did.

your thoughts?

Re: Anyone Use Norton?

XP support will indeed fade, and Vista haters will soon see that the switch won't be as bad when the service pack comes out. Vista is much better now since it's release (worst OS release in history IMO), especially since most of the program compatibility issues have been sorted out.

And yes, the defragger supplied with Windows is probably the worst defragger you can use. Programs like PerfectDisk and Diskeeper are able to do off-line defrags which sort out Windows resources that are normally in use and cannot be defragged while Windows is running. They can also defrag page files, MFT data, and rearrange your boot files for faster startups.
