Oh boy! a rattlecan mod. This I can do! Those of you who made a pattern or squares, what did you use to mask the light where you didn't want the lens paint? And which paint did you use? I have many ideas....

Re: Painted inside taillight designs??

just use mask tape. thats the easiest way to ummm mask. and make sure that you use transparent paint. something that will allow light to go through.

sorry i meant masking tape aka blue painters tape.

Re: Painted inside taillight designs??

OK I get it. (duh) I was wanting to do something a bit more elaborate than squares or lines, and masking tape (even the blue stuff) doesn't cut well for designs. (and can leave fuzzy lines with certain paint types.) I was wondering if anyone else used any of the the other "masking" films available. Oh well, I do have a way to practice. Probably anything will work if the blue stuff does. thanks

if you want to do elaborate designs you can try vinyl. just go to a design shop and get their scraps. most places will give 'em away for free. although i have never had an issue with the blue painters tape (just take your time and use a fresh razor). either way do your idea and post some pics.

i have my own vinyl business, and can cut you any mask you want to make your own one of a kind lights! flames. . jdm logos. . .anything, or, like posted above, you can get a scrap and try to cut it, but the hard part doing it by hand is to make both sides the same. pm me if i can be of assistance

Re: Painted inside taillight designs??

OK it was finally cool enough here to do this. I took Infeliciter's advice and got free vinyl from a local sign shop. (After the guy stopped laughing at me.) The stuff is true "black out vinyl" but sticky like leeches in love. Very tough to work with. (But my favorite price.) Had to cut my design into strips to apply it and there are some smoothness issues, but here it is:

(It says" Toast MMMM Toast!" and the Brave Little Toaster lights up when in reverse gear.)
