Oem spoiler questions

Hey I just bought an oem spoiler from CamoTrav over at bbsquad and I plan to just tape this thing on with 3M double sided tape. But I have one question... What is that little plastic peg thing sticking out of the spoiler. I removed the bolts, but this plastic piece is stemming out of the spoiler. Do I just cut it off??? How do people who drill their spoilers on use this piece? Does it need to be there if I use tape? Thank you to anyone who responds. I really want to put this thing on!

Re: Oem spoiler questions

hey mike 138 ( misfits related?) anyways i just put one on with 3m tape and yes i had to cut off the lil peg.

make sure you cover both sides that attach with as much 3m tape as you can. make sure you clean the area that its goin on off real good too.

i didnt think it would hold on that good cause its not much surface area but it does....it aint goin anywhere. and it beats drillin holes in yer car!

Re: Oem spoiler questions

By not having enough coffee in the morning I just bought a 2008 spoiler for my 2006 XB on Ebay UUGGGGHHH. I hope they get my refund request.
Would the 2008 even fit right, if it does I wonder how it would look? hhmmmmm.

Is it a stock spoiler? If it is heard on one of the other board I'm on they say that you can just use the 3M tape and chop off the plastic peg on the back but if you ask me when I finally get mine painted I will be doing my properly to Toyota specs. ie: drill required holes.

Re: Oem spoiler questions

hey whats up JP! good to see you again! I just 3m taped mine, if you drill it you cant ever switch spoilers without having to cover holes and could lead to rust issues up where we live.....i taped mine and believe me, its not goin anywhere!

Excellent point, Al!

3M tape will most definitely do the job for the stock spoiler. Mine originally came drilled, and when the bushings that hold the screws in place gave out, I took the 3M route.

It's been a couple of years now, no issues whatsoever. Of course, because of the holes I can never run spoiler-less....

To Choice Cat: I say try the 3M tape first. If you don't like it, or feel it's not secure enough, you always have the option of drilling. Personally, I'd rather not have the holes in my hatch, but in the end it's what makes you fell more comfortable.

Re: Oem spoiler questions

thanks for the responses ! JP,it is a stock spoiler and I read somewhere else about the 3m tape also. Are you going to drill the holes yourself or take it to toyota ? How long do you think the tape will last DTRAIN ? has it been the same tape for those couple of years ?

Yep, the same tape for 2 years (more or less). I actually used a post here by my brother Taz (Different wing, but the principle is the same:

The first thing I would suggest is have someone there to help, it would make things a lot easier.

First, gotta clean the ride...

The old OEM wing. (it's up for sale if anyone wants it)

Step one, remove the plastic caps in order to reach the bolts that hold the wing on...

Once you have the caps removed you find...what a surprise...a 10 mm bolt!

Remove one on each side of the wing...

Once the bolts are removed you can pull the wing from the Box. It will take some effort since there is double stick molding tape holding it on...

Time to remove the double stick moulding tape. I used a heat gun, goo remover and some polishing compound...

I highly suggest you DO NOT use your thumb to try and rub the residue off...

OUCH

The old wing removed, the double stick moulding tape cleaned off and the paint cleaned, it's time for the new wing...

This new wing is held in place by lots and lots of 3m Moulding Tape (from the auto parts store, Home Depot doesn't carry the right kind)...

Lots and lots...

This is the part where having another set of hands would be nice. If not to help place the wing then to at least take pictures. Sorry you'll have to pretend you can see me lining it up and sticking it on...

The finished product!...

Does anyone else hear Rod Stewart singing..."if you think I'm sexy..."

I'm loving my new wing.
Take note of the holes in the hatch - Trust me, you don't want those!!

It will last til you pull em off, your usin more tape then they use on emblems and those dont ever fall off.....plus I read when you drill you have to get a magnet and get all the shavings out from the hatch or they will rattle and rust!

Re: Oem spoiler questions

im all set to use the tape, my last question is though what about residue left from the tape ? If there comes a day that i decide I don't want the spoiler on there will the tape easily come off or will it take a piece of my paint with it when removed ? Has anyone who has used tape for a long period of time actuallly removed the spoiler and had it look fine ?

Re: Oem spoiler questions

I had my bb emblem stuck on for about a year then heat it and removed it, and everything came off fine. I highly doubt that the tape is strong enough to lift some paint off. The spoiler does give slightly if you apply some weight/pressure, but under its own weight, there should be no reason for it to become detached from your car.

Goo Gone FTW!! And don't worry, Cat. The tape won't take any paint off should you decide to remove the spoiler in the future (If you look at the pictures I posted of Taz's box, you can see no paint was removed after he cleaned things up before installing his new spoiler).
